As an Italian overweight stereotype once said ‘Here we go!”, and so we shall with first five reviews of this release. I would like to first apologise for the slow reviewing process of last month, I was actually living in my lab and had little energy after analysing soil and water samples. With that said let’s get on to the first four (of eight) titles to review in this release. Deadpool #8 - Liam Goncet’s Deadpool series continues to be a delight with an equal mix of humour and serious points raised in both the loud and quiet parts of the issue. What makes the series really shine however is the effort the writer puts into the side characters, giving them moments to shine that equal those offered to the titular character. Speaking of words with double entendres I feel that there were a few hidden throughout the issue which really cheered up my commute, enough that I’m going to overlook the ‘cannonball’ even though no modern navies use that kind of ammunition anymore. Hopefully this series won’t sink into the depths and will remain a staple of the site.
Rating - 8.5/10 (Mamma Mia)
New Mutants #4 - The battle with the Demon Bear is concluded in this well constructed issue that promises another old enemy reappearing soon. Historically I never cared for ‘X’ titles both here and in actual print, but Gavin McMahon (and others) really twisted my arm with what’s being produced. It doesn’t hurt that Gavin is willing to push his work and his characters to their breaking points either. While the Demon Bear took centre stage I feel that the developments with Mirage and Karma were probably the most important part of the issue and it was nice to see a Force Works mention as well. I’m sure all will be revealed in the New Year with #5 et all.
Rating - 9.25/10 (Mamma Mia)
Project Hades #10 - Perhaps the most overlooked series on the site and one (if not the best) villain protagonist stories on both M2K and DC 2000. Honestly I can’t commend Dan Ingram enough for reaching into the toybox and breathing life (and interest) into these forgotten characters. Said characters are well used as evidenced in the clever use of powers in the Weapon Chi battle. In addition we got to see Hurricane break his own code, something that shows how desperate he has become during his stay in Mount Hades. While I say this every time I hope we get a new issue very soon, this title is to good to be left open for long.
Rating- 9.5/10 (Mamma Mia)
Serpent Society #2 - Speaking of villain protagonist titles Dan Dolan’s Serpent Society continues to surprise as it establishes a brutal regime change throughout the long lived organisation. Ophiuchus continues to be a creepy villain playing his own game, one I don’t even think the other members of his team fully understand. While his motives weren’t clear, the brutality of Cottonmouth vs Cottonmouth for continued usage of the name was all too bloody and honestly surprised me that Marvel hasn’t already covered in the actual canon. All of this made me wish Crossfire was still around, I would loved to see how he stacked up against the Serpent Handler.
Rating - 8.5/10 (Mamma Mia)

I’m glad you’re continuing to enjoy the series (and it’s maybe interested you in some of these characters!) Admittedly, I found it difficult to write this arc since there’s only so much growling one can describe but the Demon Bear needed to be tackled. It was one of their greatest failings. Team dynamics will be explored more in-depth since the villain has a way of, shall we say, bringing out the worst in other people and getting them to speak their minds. I’m excited for it and I hope it delivers!

Ophiuchus numero 2 is trying to set himself apart from Mikel Fury by sheer competence so hopefully he can keep that up! lol And yes I'm trying to bring in a lot of snake themed villains in the MU that have never been associated with the Society before.

Hmm could the Voice be making an appearance? The villain is obscure (and from the New Mutants personal history) but he’s not that obscure. Hah. He’s not Empath either. I’m not interested in stalker boy mind-raping Amara again.

Despite Deadpool being a solo title I've always felt that every character should get time to show their personality. Also, as we'll learn in the New Year with issue 9, it was no ordinary navy that attacked our heroes.

A less wise man said ‘Wah why am I not playable in Smash?’. So we continue with four more reviews to determine their empirical value on the ‘Wah-Olof Scale of Awesome’ sic. With no further adieu let’s dive in...right up to our necks.
Black Panther #8 - Black Panther is popular right now and eventually after 7.5 issues Jake Hawkins has begun to capitalise on T’Challa’s odd as hell rouges gallery. While Kilmonger is by far one of the most popular, he’s often badly characterised but not here. Despite being a ‘Beast of the Hand’ all Killmongers tactical thinking not to mention his vindictiveness is on display in this issue. It ultimately feels as if the White Wolf may have miscalculated what he had the Hand revive and I’m sure it will cost him down the line. Speaking of the Hand a great cliffhanger was dropped at the end of this issue, one I look forward to seeing be developed further.
Rating - 9/10 (Wah!)
Ghost Rider #8 - Travis Hiltz’s Ghost Rider(s) series is one I’m always eager to see shine, if only because I love the Marvel-esque take on mythology it presents. The writer not only linked the story into the annual (or vice versa) but he pulled a surprising double bluff in the case of the villain Old Scratch (who I genuinely thought was dead and buried) and Salem’s Seven in general. While the action seemed a little sticky at places, possibly due to the difficulty of not running everyone over with a ghost car, this issue was a good read of a fun series I always enjoy reading.
Rating - 8/10 (Wah!)
Illuminati #1 - This tittle smells big and grandiose just sitting there with it’s A-List cast but something bothered me about it. It’s not the classic Tobias Christopher relationship drama and it’s not the Jake Hawkins classic action scenes, in fact I can’t accurately place my finger on what it is. Is Illuminati #1 a bad issue? No, it’s good it’s just that something is confusing, nay blinding me regarding it. Will I keep reading, eagerly waiting for absolution? Yes, great oaks grow from small acorns and I suspect, despite the early frost, that this series will be one to watch as it develops.
Rating - 7.75/10 (Wah?)
New Warriors #36 - Yay Franklin’s back and there are reprucussions. Honestly it felt like the end of a book, not necessarily a bad thing considering the length of the last arc, and one handled in a mature manner, especially regarding the reunion scenes and Juston’s annoyance regarding recent(ish) events. Then again this is what Tobias Christopher excelled at, so are any of us surprised about that. The upcoming arc looks interesting, possibly bleeding into other titles containing young heroes, which hopefully will lead to a nice meaty crossover in the near future. All that’s left to say is...
Rating - 8.75/10 (Wah...lcome home Franklin)
Also thank the goddess that’s behind us...

Thanks for the nice review. I was worried I was getting too cute with the villain reveal. I liked the idea, but we all know how weird my taste is.
and I'll take the fight scene criticism. 90% of the time I'm dissatisfied with my fight scene choreography. Especially when I try to do a big group fight.

I am planning to introduce a lot of classic Black Panther rogues over the next twelve issues, so I'm glad you're enjoying Kilmonger. I didn't like how many people glorified him after the movie, and wanted to return him to being a proper villain. As for Illuminati, this issue was really the set-up, stay tuned for the roller coaster that I promise Tobias and I have in store!

Yeah, I hoped Hurricane crossing a line would convey just how deep in the sh*t they all are. Though for most villains, destroying a corpse barely rates. Hope you enjoy the next issue, his origin, just as much!

Spreading some Christmas cheer with a few reviews!
Ghost Rider #8 - This is the first numbered issue of Ghost Rider I've read (I read the annual before it), and while it took a moment to catch my bearings, I was immediately captivated by how well Travis Hiltz captures the personalities of the quartet of Riders. Add in Druid and Salem's Seven and we have a great issue. The fight scene with the Riders and the Seven was fun and the villain reveal was unexpected but interesting to see play out. This may have been my first foray into the main Ghost Rider series, but I'll definitely be waiting for the next issue.
Illuminati #1 - This is a fun concept with a great cast and even better writers. I enjoyed seeing the Illuminati form and, as always with Jake Hawkins, the action scenes were thrilling. I particularly enjoyed Namor, in all his dickish glory, and Doctor Strange. The set-up with Star-Lord is certainly intriguing although I find it very strange that, of all the people in the world, Franklin chose him to pal around with. While I enjoyed the issue, my biggest complaint has to be Emma Frost. She feels like a completely different character than the one I'm used to seeing. No sarcasm or casual self-interest, it felt wrong and, if we're being honest, a bland take compared to her usual personality. Outside of those problems, Illuminati is shaping up to be a very interesting series full of big characters and even bigger action, I look forward to more!
Nero & Hannigan #6 - The current arc concludes in this action-packed issue with our dynamic duo facing down the titular hounds and their Huntsman. As with the conclusion of the last arc, Cheese fills this issue with exciting setpieces that continue to build until the conclusion. I really enjoyed getting to see Hannigan get some more spotlight this go around, showcasing how she is coming into her own by working with Nero. In the end, the Huntsman is undone by his own hounds and it looks like our duo have unofficially agreed to team-up in the future. Just in time too as it seems Nicky Bats has something planned and, thankfully, so does John Cheese.

This arc was important to get right and any Project Argent fans out there might know why. For now ole' Nicky will have to sit out an arc before his plan can come to fruition, and like Agent Hain he'll have to take a secondary antagonist role (at least for a little bit). Hopefully the upcoming 'Gift of Magic' arc will likewise impress as we head into the new year.
