Young Avengers #1 by Dan Dolan
I've never read the canon Young Avengers and to be perfectly honest it's been a very long since I read Hunter Lambright's volume. In fact, I think I only read the first few issues before it went on hiatus. He's since wrapped it up, more or less, and Dan Dolan has taken the opportunity to launch a new volume. The cast is largely the same but there were some shake-ups and a couple of logical additions like Riri Williams. Dan spends his first issue largely focusing on the cast of the series and it seems like their story is largely a character driven one, at least to begin with. I think this is a good choice because readers a chance to see who all of the main players are, how they interact, and the general idea behind the team's formation and training. There's a fair bit of drama between the teenage characters as well, and one dynamic in particular escalates to a rather shocking ending.
A few things that took me out of the story a bit. First things first, a cursory read through and proof read goes a long way at keeping the reader βin the zone.β There were a number of grammatical errors and punctuation errors throughout the issue. Second, and this may not be Dan's problem at all but Weebly's, I noticed a lot of extra paragraph breaks where there shouldn't be any. Usually this is indicative of a new scene if there isn't a line break, but these were happening mid-conversation and mid-action scene. Kinda weird, but probably more of a technical issue than a writing one. Finally, there were a lot of characters in this issue β which isn't a problem β but some of them I had trouble keeping track of. That may be more my fault as a new reader than anything, though given this is a first issue then some proper introductions (through dialogue and narrative) would have gone a long way.
Overall, a lot of sound choices here for the launch of a new volume. Dan has some room to grow as a writer, but you can tell he's got a lot of ideas for these characters, their relationships, and how their training as Young Avengers will go. I'll be back for more issues of this series!
Mr. Frostee's Rating: 2.5 / 5 Snowballs
