Force Works #41 by Daniel Ingram
There is one thing you have to admire about Dan’s FORCE WORKS and that’s the amount of real world research that goes into the title. When Dan is going to give you a viewpoint about an issue or some dismal facts about a foreign country, he makes sure that his information isn’t just coming out of his ass or through Fox News (which is far worse than the former). Dan doesn’t just assume and I appreciate it that about his writing. It’s rare I can be confident that the words of a writer are anchored by actual research and Dan falls into that.
So the protagonist highlight of this issue for me was Moonstar. I think every fanfic site eventually develops and molds characters that are prominent at their site and not necessarily at others. At Marvel 2000, some of those characters include Pyro, Maggott, Joseph, Joseph Chapman and I would include Moonstar on that list too. Under Dan’s pen, she has evolved into one of the M2Kverse’s premiere heroes and leaders IMO. Dan puts that on display this issue as Moonstar is not only able to command her, but also gets The Serpent Society to take her lead as well.
The antagonist highlight of the issue for me was without a doubt Gorgon. Dan makes this guy so much more menacing than Millar ever did when introducing him. This is a guy worth being scared shitless of and I would point to the last scene of the issue as absolute proof of that. With him being a member of The Apocalypse Dawn, I see a revival on the horizon for that particular group of mutant fanatics. It was also pretty good to see Alastaire back again as he was always an interesting character and I think he had a pretty shitty send off during The Twelve event. So hopefully he’ll show up again before this arc is out.
If there was a problem with this issue I think it was with the pacing. Dan has a lot of characters showing up here and I think if you’re going to have that many characters in the mix you have to be really careful in how you pace things. I know because I have abysmally failed in my own attempts at this over the years. So I think Dan just needs to be careful with that and makes sure to spread out the character coverage more evenly.
