This project seemed to kill two birds with one stone:
- Dino's desire to write his old X-Men team again
- Revive a bunch of mutants he killed off a long time ago
While the prospect of having an out for bringing back core mutants to M2K is welcomed, I had trouble seeing the reason behind the majority of the miniseries. Things happened extremely quickly in the first three issues and they were actually unnecessary as far as the plot goes. You have your standard plot points that are nearly a template for how to tell this type of story:
A) Bad guy puts something into motion
B) Hero finds out
C) Hero recruits other heroes
D) Heroes track down the bad guy
E) Confrontation
If a reader decided to skip points A, B, and C to just start reading right before the confrontation they wouldn't have missed a single thing. Three-fourths of this event didn't do anything to progress the story, but when you do get to the actual implications of the bad guy's motivations you can see a pretty massive change in the M2Kverse. Basically, other writers were given a setup via the Ressurection Wave to get something cool done and explore the potential impact this would have on our shared world.
Hey, it's fanfic, I get it. I've written a lot of stuff around these parts that were for my sole enjoyment as well. I based original characters on myself and my then-fiance-now-wife-and-mother-of-my-three-kids. We all do stuff like that, because that's one of the great things about fanfic. We can play with our big brother's toys and even smash them to bits if we want, and there's no actual consequence. We just have the pleasure of controlling our favorite characters' lives for a little while. Essentially, we play god.
So while I find all of the team recruiting sections of this event totally useless, I'm sure that Dino had a lot of fun writing those scenes, and I applaud his ability to venture back into his fanfic past. More power to him!
I'm using this event as a means to return a central character for my upcoming X-Factor title back into the mix. I hope others follow that example, because there are a LOT of possibilities to screw around with here.
