With a pretty decent backlog of stories this month, we're going to be releasing issues in chunks to catch up! Here is your first of three M2K batches for January 2018! AVENGERS #70 - What's in a name? Apparently the media would have you believe quite a lot, which causes a stir among some of the Avengers. Plus, Gravity pops in at the request of Bruce Banner, other team members track down Diablo, and some cosmic kerfuffle brings itself to the mansion. Written by Steve Crosby! Read it at: marvel2k.weebly.com/avengers-70.htmlFALLEN ANGELS #38 - Genosha falls! In this stunning conclusion to the long-running series, all bets are off. Witness the massive war that rocked a planet and discover just who survives. This issues serves as a setup for a huge event! Written by Steve Crosby & Cory Wiegel! Read it at: marvel2k.weebly.com/fa-38.htmlMAX 2000 #41 - Mystical mayhem ensues as special operatives from a secret SHIELD division head into the unknown. Written by John Cheese! Read it at: marvel2k.weebly.com/max-41.htmlNEW WARRIORS #26 - Part of the team is trapped in the Negative Zone with Annhilus, so a rescue mission is quickly mounted. Of course, the best laid plans... When Alpha is snatched up by someone who is a little too interested in Earth, could anything else possibly go wrong? Written by Tobias Christopher! Read it at: marvel2k.weebly.com/nw-26.html

So I was hoping that this would be a quiet season, with little to review, so I could get up to my usual evil mechanisations. Alas this January, M2K appears to be stuffed to the gunwales with stories. Not that that's a bad thing, especially with the creativity shown by the various writers here and over at DC 2000 as well. So will that creativity result in a masterpiece or will it be a soggy mess needing to be cleaned up? Let's find out as we jump headfirst into 2018's reviews.
Avengers #70 - What's in a name? Apparently a lot as the title of Captain Marvel seems to be up for grabs. Steve Crosby weaves the three sub-plots of this issue beautifully, giving each the due care it deserves as well as fostering a certain feeling of foreboding, something he does well in his Avengers series. With developments from the Fallen Angels (see below) fresh in the mind of the M2K universe, it will be interesting to see what fallout will occur and how it will effect certain characters. Already it appears as if the Avengers are playing with fire, with their suggestions regarding prisoner extradition, one that will likely paint them in a bad light to the nations they are forced to save in the future. But as one title falls, another rises. Let's hope for a continued long and entertaining Avengers run for 2018.
Rating - 8.5/10 (Masterpiece)
Fallen Angels #38 - And so Genosha falls, but not before those behind its ransack are dragged down with it. Fallen Angels, as I have mentioned before, is a site favourite and the ending carved out by Steve Crosby and Cory Wiegel is beautiful, summing up everything we loved about this title. While a sorrowful tear must be shed for the passing of this title, Fallen Angels has produced a number of brilliant storylines and sets to deliver one last gift, as indicated by the writers. So rather then sob I will instead salute the passing of this title. Long Live Genosha and Long Live the Fallen Angels.
Rating - 9.5/10 (Masterpiece - but then where we expecting any less)
New Warriors #26 - So the Negative Zone's heaviest hitters are squaring off, with the New Warriors caught square in the middle. It is certainly not unusual for a villain to catch a hero off guard, nor for Tobias Christopher to write relationships between family and teammates so well, but what he's written here feels like it's going to become a lot darker then his usual lot. Not that this is a problem, but with such figures as Annihilus and Blastarr running loose, it feels like any fight to come will be a lot harder for whoever tries to rescue Jonny and Alpha. And let's not forget Franklin, can he be saved before he forgets who he is? Such questions will likely be answered soon in the usual stunning way Tobias handles things.
Rating - 9/10 (Masterpiece)

Thanks for all of the kind feedback on Fallen Angels, John! Y'know, though Steve and I had a lot of fun and were really enthusiastic about wrapping up this old fan favorite, I was honestly worried no one would read it. Glad we at least got a fan in you!

I get the feeling that John is leading up to something big with all these Nero appearances.

Finally got some free time so here are some reviews!
Avengers #70
The Avengers face three different foes in this issue and each one manages to bring it's own thrills. First, Ms. Marvel and the main crew tackle Diablo but also end up having to deal with Binary. I love the dynamic between Warbird and Binary and can only imagine it will heat up (pun intended) as we approach AvX. There is, however, another threat in the form of Drax, currently under the control of Thanos and we get a fun intro to Gravity as he proves himself against the Destroyer. I like the set-up for a future storyline here it feels very old-school Marvel where there would always be another threat waiting. We also get some nice development with Photon as she battles rouge Atlanteans and also helps save our heroes against Diablo. All around, a fun issue that makes me look forward to more.
Fallen Angels #38
Speaking of AvX, the groundwork for it is laid out here. Genosha falls but not all is lost. I really enjoyed the jumping between past and present to tell the story and aftermath of the battle on Genosha. Magneto's dream for a mutant nation are crushed beneath the feet of his enemies but it is Amelia Voight, perhaps his most trusted ally, who ends up saving the day, as well as a large number of innocent mutants. I appreciated Voight's final sacrifice as well as the search for Madrox Prime and look forward to seeing him deal with the situation on Genosha.
Max 2000 #41
This issue was largely set-up for events in John Cheese's main series but it was a thrilling read nonetheless. Cheese retains his usual knack of incorporating long forgotten characters and organizations and giving them some new life. While this issue doesn't have a lot of time to flesh out any of the characters it still gives them all a showcase for their abilities and offers a nice hook for the continuation of this story.
New Warriors #26
One thing that Tobias Christopher has that few writers are able to match is an uncanny ability to make even the most dire situations fun and comedic. New Warriors has always been a lighter title in terms of tone, even when things are going horribly wrong, and this issue proves that. Half the Warriors have been transported to the Negative Zone by Annihilus with the remaining Warriors split between keeping a watch on Earth and going to rescue the others. This goes about as you'd expect with both Human Torch and Alpha captured by different foes. They've gotten themselves into quite a jam and, as always, it's going to be a blast seeing them try to get out.

Thanks for the review on what essentially is Nero and Hannigan #0, such words bode well for the debut of the actual series in May.
