Dipping my toes into the waters of Marvel 2000 for the first time since I started writing fan fiction (frighteningly a whopping 13 years ago). As a few will have seen, I'd initially been interested in establishing the world of the Runaways but for continuity reasons, the plans couldn't be merged with the characters as they are on the site. Still, I had a plan B and I'm actually very happy to be moving ahead with it. I've always enjoyed the New Mutants and the next generation of heroes, so banding them together once again was something that really excited me. It's going to be darker, it's going to establish these characters in new way and really delve into who and what they are and where they fit in the world now that they aren't children living in the shadows of the X-Men. Earth-616 has struggled with branching them out so I wanted to give it a shot, to make something of them now that they're adults. Hope you'll enjoy what's to come as we watch the New Mutants adventure through their twenty-somethings. They're about to step through the past to define their futures!

This is exciting. I've been reading the original series again, and it's surprising to see how dark a lot of it was. For virtually the entire existence of M2K, Sunspot has been on his own with the Fallen Angels, and that status just took a big shift. We'll be touching on that briefly in AvX, Gavin, so let me or Cory know if you want anything set up.

Yeah, I think he's going to need to talk to you guys, because Rictor and Sunspot are in his main cast. He's working with Ingram to include Mirage (when she's not cavorting with Force Works). I know that Rictor and Sunspot are seen as unsavory in certain circles these days at M2K, but I think that could create a really interesting dynamic within the group. How would Mirage, a very public figure now, interact with Rictor and Sunspot, alleged terrorists? Should make for good reading.

To be fair, the noir mixed with horror tone of the New Mutants movie is pretty much what inspired this series (tonally, New Mutants: Dead Souls is also likely to be similar). This won't be an origin tale, we've all heard that. This is about looking towards who they've been established as to expand upon each of them and I really hope that I can get that across over the course of the series. I've started the issue, around two scenes in, and this is the current format of the New Mutants opener as a preview for the series and my writing style. "Into the Badlands", Part 1.
CONROY, WISCONSIN NOWIllyana Rasputina, the youngest daughter of Nikolai and Alexandra, the mutant known as Magik, twisted the hilt of her glistening soulsword between her tightened fingers as she grimaced from behind the protection of the blade. It had been years since the mutant sorceress, then capable of simply casting “stepping discs” to allow teleportation, had succumbed to death via the Legacy Virus. It seemed so surreal that she would once again stand alongside her former friends, even if the situation they had once again found themselves in was less than fortuitous. As a child of Limbo, tormented and tortured beyond even the worst of nightmares, Illyana had been unable to slip peacefully into the night. Even after her friends, the so-called New Mutants, had rescued her, the Russian had been haunted by the experience and, as her body decayed in the cold earth of the Xavier Institute, her soul had been forced to once again endure the endless assault of the demon Belasco and his demonic hordes. Illyana had risen from the experience stronger, more competent, but she carried herself with a darker edge. When death should have been her ending, it had set the path towards a new beginning. Axe brandished his weapon, the broad-shouldered brute had expected the slender blonde to be intimidated by him as all his previous victims had been. It was common that enemies much larger than her underestimated Illyana but when the legions of demons had descended upon a woman, it tended to alter her perception of fear. Without hesitation, a slight smirk even formed on her thin lips, Magik stormed forward, holding the blade high above her head. Axe swung low, aiming directly for her abdomen, but she sidestepped his assault and landed one of her own. The soulsword clanged against his invulnerable skin, sending him snaking to the left. He roared, it was nothing short of animalistic, as he turned back towards her and launched a second attack. As Illyana continued her battle, the Nova Roman Amara Aquilla stepped forward. Her golden hair slithered from her armoured shoulders with every step. She moved with the grace of a dancer, her arms swaying languidly as she stared down her serpentine enemy, the Gladiator known as Viperion. Amara had been one of the first recruited into the merry band of mutants after the originals had started on their adventure. The beauty had quickly turned heads and earned the respect of her friends, it was hard to underestimate a woman who could make the very earth dance on her slightest whim. Viperion snarled and hissed, snapping at the mutant as she approached, fire springing to life at her heels. Stretching her hands outward, Amara’s skin rippled with hues of orange as she burst into flames. Jumping forward, Magma caught Snaketongue by the neck, her touch burning its skin, and launched him into the nearby wall. As Magma moved towards him, she smiled menacingly. “This is gonna be quick.” Behind her, the cone-bra wearing Ivich Williamson – outdated as the green skinned mutant looked – was whimpering on her knees as Danielle Moonstar infiltrated her mind, utilising her deepest fears and projecting them into the Gladiator’s mind without restraint. Twin blades lay unused just within her reach as the woman desperately clawed for her mental freedom. It seemed as though the Native American mutant had already proven victorious until the murkiness of Ivich’s eyes began to clear and the green-skinned woman rolled forward, catching a hold of her swords as she bounded upright. There was a moment of hesitation in Mirage’s reaction. In the years since she’d left behind the Xavier Institute and the New Mutants, eventually making her way to Force Works, she had grown as a warrior. There had always been a recklessness to the woman’s bravery, Danielle had been prone to throwing herself into situations with little regard for herself because she knew the pro’s by far outweighed the con’s but now she doubted her capability, even if just for a moment, and that could prove deadly. She narrowly managed to duck beneath the swing of Ivich’s weapons. Ivich snarled. “My life has been nothing but fear and loathing. Your mind-games can’t hold me.” Danielle rebounded, slipping to the left just as the blades thrashed against the cement at their feet. With a war cry, Mirage pelted forward. She’d quickly learned that psychic prowess would never be enough to establish herself as a hero and Danielle was nothing if not quick on her feet and firm with her fists. If her time at the Institute had transformed her from mere mutant to superhero, then Force Works had shaped her into a keen and strategic warrior. Recklessly, she bolted forward and landed her foot firmly against Ivich’s stomach, sending her backwards into the nearest wall. As the building shuddered violently, Julio Richter sidestepped the charging Horns – the Gladiator’s movements and countenance being akin to a rhino. He was heavy footed and slow to react whereas Rictor had the advantage of being nimble as well as powerful. He waved his hands, sending a shockwave through the earth as Horns was thrown upward before crashing into the cement with a thud. His time with the New Mutants, as brief as it was before they became X-Force, had taught him how to fight and the weak, bullied kid he’d been on the streets of Guadalajara was in the distant past. Shatterstar had seen to that. Even his shot at returning normalcy had been so fleeting that it seemed like the blink of an eye. Horns bellowed as he charged once again. As Rictor reached towards the earth, he felt a kindred spirit, it was like the warm embrace of an old friend. As the earth heeded his call, cement cracked and, throwing his arms outward, it shot forward in a wave as the cement crashed into Horns’ thickened hide. Above them, Roberto da Costa continued to fire energy blasts at the evasive, purpled skinned gargoyle known as Lexi. The one-time President of San Marcos, as much viewed as a terrorist as Rictor was, ducked as Lexi attempted to grasp at him. Roberto smiled broadly as he barrelled upward and crushed Lexi into the roof, moving to the right, the purple-skinned mutate swirled and collided with the ground. “Is this really the best they could come up with?” he laughed cockily, loudly taunting the villains below. “I’m surprised Karma couldn’t take them all by herself.” His bravado was short-lived as Lexi recovered and shot forward, smacking into him in a tackle. Winded, Sunspot lost his control and crashed into the earth. The Brazilian narrowly avoided an axe as Magik collided with, and disarmed, the same-named Gladiator beside him. She grunted, slamming the soulsword against his remaining axe but the Gladiator wasn’t so easily best as he reached beneath his weapon and pounded his fist into her stomach. Fire billowed around them as Magma continued her assault against Viperion, the serpentine creature having grown to four times his original size. A roaring from beyond the walls of the building caught them all off-guard as both New Mutant and Gladiator paused their various battles. Amara, nearest the window, turned to her right. Her eyes focused solely on Danielle as Viperion slithered from her grasp. “That can’t be . . .” Danielle, in a moment of bravery and true fear, stepped through the doorway. Her eyes looked towards the heaven at a figure she had hoped to never face again. “ The Demon Bear.”

As New Mutants #1 is completed and currently in the editing process, I thought it might be fun to give a hint of what's in store. I've planned New Mutants #1-17 and some of the titles might be enough for die-hard fans to know which cold case we'll be working on hahah.
New Mutants #1-4: "Into the Badlands" New Mutants #5-7: "A Weaver's Curse" New Mutants #8-9: "Deathmatch" New Mutants #10-12: "G is for Genocide" New Mutants #13-17: "Plight of the Princess"
All are previous foes. All are cases that were never properly closed. All are also from the original New Mutants run (not succeeding revamps).

Great start, Gavin! Really looking forward to this.
Not sure if you'll be addressing this or not, but I just thought I'd give you the heads up about Magma at M2K. She was a brief member of the X-Men (recruited by a Cyclops-impostor, long story) and was manipulated by the Brotherhood to blow up the X-Mansion (no biggie, insurance and all). She had a brief flirtation/fling with Radius (Jared Corbo) during that time. She goes by Alison Crestmere at M2K (I think this was her identity before the cut-off) and Amara Aquilla was revealed to be her split personality, which was developed/unleashed by the Grey King to turn her against the X-Men in the first place. This was back in X-Men Prime by David Wheatley and the story was picked-up and wrapped-up by Brad Horton and I.
At the end of her stint with the title, she left to Genosha where Moira was going to help her put her mind back together and recover from what the Brotherhood did to her. Radius may have left with her, I can't remember. That was all a long time ago, so you could easily say she recovered and she's now... in whatever place you want her to be. Good luck and lemme know if you need any more info!

Good luck and lemme know if you need any more info! Ah okay. I hadn't known that was how the Amara Aquilla/Allison Crestmere storyline had been resolved. I had intended to use the background as Amara being a Nova Roman princess quite prominently so I'll have to rework the character and change the last arc I'd planned. I'll change it all to "Allison" and rewrite her parts of the issue to fill in the new information. I'm sure I'll probably be able to find another abandoned subplot to explore her without the Nova Roman connection. I'm glad you're looking forward to the series!
Update: after a little thinking, I've managed to reconcile both my idea with her canon history and in a way that I think will honour them both. Hopefully it'll play out as good as in my head.

A preview of New Mutants #2:
THE BADLANDS REALM OF THE DEMON BEAR – NOW
Amara moved towards the peak’s ledge, stumbling slightly as a wave of energy surged through her and igniting her previously icy blue eyes. The blonde beauty paused for a moment as the Brazilian Roberto quickly rushed to her side and offered her support that she wasn’t sure she’d even needed. The wooziness that rushed from the pit of her stomach was like nothing she’d ever known, it didn’t make her feel ill. It was quite the contrary. Amara felt stronger than she ever had before, the heat of the Badlands was offering her empowerment rather than challenging her abilities and it was exhilarating. It reminded her of all those years before when she had been stood on the precipice of certain death, staring into a pit of a volcano, and she had felt powerful rather than afraid.
“Are you okay?” he asked, tightening his arms around her.
She shrugged him off. “Yeah. I’m fine. In fact, I feel kind of . . . awesome.”
They stood for a moment, staring deeply at one another, before Amara stalked back towards the mountain’s ledge.
“Was this your idea of a joke?” Danielle snapped at Illyana as she spun on her heels, bouncing from where she’d landed with a thud, and postured up against the Russian teleporter. “I agreed to bring home those kids. I said nothing about taking down a species of Demon Bears. I work for a government-funded team. Do you know what could happen if it got out that I was fraternising with known terrorists? This was meant to be one and done.”
“Ouch,” grumbled Julio, shooting a disheartened glance in the direction of Roberto, who seemed equally as irritated as the Mexican mutant.
“No offense,” she muttered hurriedly. “Obviously that’s not how I see it but there’s more to consider here that our own personal relationships. Force Works can’t be dragged into any of the messes that involved the Fallen Angels and especially not San Marcos.”
Illyana remained nonchalant. “I very much doubt the paparazzi will be travelling to the Badlands to snap this Hallmark moment, Dani. It’s not as if your Alison Blaire, and even she isn’t that relevant anymore.” Folding her arms, she sighed. “I needed to get it out of Wisconsin and sending it home was the best idea. I didn’t expect the teleportational backlash that dragged us all here. It couldn’t have been avoided.”
Roberto furrowed his brows. “I think it’d be a good time to note that yeah, the Fallen Angels had some questionable methods but neither Julio or myself are rotting in a prison cell, Dani. That’s because when push came to shove, we were exonerated.”
“And how many palms did you grease to get out of that one, Bobby? It looks like there’s more of Emmanuel in you than we ever even knew,” retorted the Native American, her mouth was already running before she was able comprehend the reality or the harshness of her words. She gave an almost apologetic glance but she held her position firmly.
Amara bristled. “I hardly think that’s fair, Dani. No-one turned their backs on you when you joined Hela.”
Roberto grimaced, the irritation was clear in his tone. “I may not have always gone the right way about it, Moonstar, but I have beliefs and I stood for them. I didn’t sell-out for the first government hand-me-down that told me I could finally be recognised as a superhero.”
Tension hung heavily in the air.
“Is this helping anything?” replied Illyana, droll. “We’ve all done shit in the past that could put us on the FBI’s Most Wanted list and somehow, we always manage to end up right back here, with each other, so maybe we should try and do something we set out to do. Xi’an is relying on us to get her siblings back, the Gladiators have already escaped. The sooner we deal with this and get out of here, the better for everyone involved.” She stared pointedly at Danielle. “Then we can cut ties with each other as we see fit.”
Illyana moved towards Amara on the ledge.
“I think what we need to remember is that we’ve been given an opportunity here, a chance to close this loose thread,” she concluded.
Julio nodded. “And isn’t that why we came together in the first place? I think Illyana’s right. Let’s finish this and then we can head back to find Leong and Nga.”
“We could do what we set out to do,” snapped Danielle. “We could teleport back to Earth, find the twins and get on with our lives.”
“Coward,” snarled Roberto, still bitter.
Amara stepped forward, placing a hand delicately on his shoulder. Her eyes both reproachful and soothing, even as they burned with an unfamiliar intensity.
“We’re in another reality,” she began. “Time travels differently from back on Earth. This could be our opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.” As she moved towards the Native American, Danielle stepped back, and Amara paused but continued speaking. “I know this doesn’t feel comfortable yet. It’s been years since we’ve been together but it’ll fall into place.”
She addressed the group, her eyes imploring each of them to listen.
“We have to get over this pettiness.”
Silence fell over them.
Danielle finally broke it as she began to stalk off. “Let’s just get this over with.”
The New Mutants followed, some more reluctantly than others.

And now, a preview of New Mutants #3, with a little focus on Karma since she's been under-utilised thus far. This issue also has a little more fighting, plenty of talking but also more action, and the New Mutants remain at each other's throats as they attempt to navigate both the Badlands and the recklessness of a certain mutant sorceress of Russian heritage.
XAVIER INSTITUTE FOR HIGHER LEARNING WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NEW YORK
Xi’an looked around the lab cautiously. In the hours since her amputation and transportation from Oregon to New York, she’d been unable to contact any of her friends. Even after they’d managed to collate leads of the Gladiators movements, the Vietnamese mutant had hoped to be involved as best she could but with information from the New Mutants lacking, she was feeling even more isolated than she had been when trapped in a hospital bed on the west coast. Exhaling as she allowed her mind to be spiral on the mistakes she’d made, Xi’an wasn’t aware as Hank McCoy slipped into the room. His almost cobalt ursine form bulking out his lab coat hilariously.
“A penny for your thoughts?” quipped the scientist as he moved towards the end of her bed, his teeth bared in a friendly smile.
Somehow, she didn’t feel it was sincere. Nor did she feel the need to confide in him but who else could she confide in?
Xi’an exhaled. “I’m just worried about Nga and Leong. Every moment longer that they’re missing could mean another minute of torture for them. I know the others will look for them, high and low, but we’ve all changed so much that I’m not even sure they can come together for long enough to do the job. Not to mention that I haven’t heard from them. I expected them to check in.”
“Not to float my own boat, Xi’an, but the New Mutants were very well trained. They learned from the best and whilst some of them have made some . . . mistakes since leaving the institute behind, the weight of the task they’ve been given will become more of a bond than you know.”
“But what if it isn’t? What if they lose focus?” continued Xi’an. “That’s our whole schtick isn’t it? It always has been. We jump from calamity to calamity, leaving chaos and loose ends in our wake because we’ve never been able to focus. We’ve never been more than the overactive teenagers that you all thought we were. Maybe it’s because I’m the oldest but I see that now. I know that we’ve brought this all upon ourselves.”
Hank seemed concerned at the pressure she was placing on both herself and her friends. His eyes observed her with a curious expression, it was almost as though he, and the other X-Men who had mentored them, had somehow failed to prepare them for the world that they had found themselves in again and again. He contemplative for a second, attempting to focus his thoughts so that he could respond in the most appropriate way.
“This isn’t your fault. It isn’t their fault either. The Gladiators have faced many heroes before and after you, and even when they’ve been defeated, they’ve bounced back. Listen to me, there is only so much we can do and sometimes this line of work places us in dangerous and uncomfortable places but we do get through it. If we don’t hear from the others, then we’ll find them, and we’ll get the answers that everyone needs to know.”
He patted her on the shoulder and she realised that there would be no further arguing with him, so Xi’an returned to her thoughts.

The sneak peek of New Mutants #4 is once again from the perspective of Karma (because the rest of the issue is basically one long scene that would spoil too much). This issue deals with the conclusion of "Into the Badlands" and the introduction of two new mutants. This is the inaugural arc and so, hopefully from here on out, I'll have found everyone's voices and the series will go from strength to strength. The next arc is actually one I'm excited to write. It should be hella fun. Your clue: spider-ish.
XAVIER INSTITUTE FOR HIGHER LEARNING WESTCHESTER, NEW YORK
Xi’an struggled, her hands clasping the frames as she manoeuvred the metallic leg prosthetic and sweat forming on her knitted brow. It had been an age since she’d found herself rescued from the troublesome background in Vietnam and still, as she worked through her newfound disability, Xi’an couldn’t name a moment when she had ever felt more abandoned. In Xi’an’s weakest moment, she had trusted the people who had been with her from her youth and they had disappeared into the aether without so much as a word. The Vietnamese mutant was used to the young adults collectively known as the New Mutants fading in and out of her life, it was the norm for all of them. It was why she was almost able to understand that their own lives could easily have dragged them out of hers over the years. Still, a major part of her also focused on the very real issue that Leong and Nga where missing and Xi’an had relied on others to find them because she was no longer able to.
Hank’s words still rested on her mind. “If we don’t hear from the others, we’ll find them,” was what she recalled from their conversation on the previous day.
She wanted to trust them. She wanted to have faith. After all those years together, didn’t they deserve her trust in them? Yet, she knew they weren’t the same people anymore. Roberto had veered so far from the path the X-Men had taught them that he’d spent several years considered to be a dictator of a foreign land, with Julio – who she scarcely felt like she knew – at his side. Amara’s halo wasn’t much cleaner after she’d previously attacked the mansion. Danielle had done well for herself, establishing herself as a hero in the eyes of the government, but her life was shrouded in secrecy that left Xi’an feeling most distant from her. At least she knew who the others were. Illyana had spent most of the last several years dead and so, who even was she anymore? They weren’t who she remembered and their visit to the hospital in Eagle Point had made that abundantly clear.
Taking a step, Xi’an miscalculated her control of the prosthetic and she collapsed to the ground, hard. Grimacing through the pain, her raven hair cascaded around her face, she tried to breathe through it. She’d knew the risk of hastening her recovery when she started. Allowing her hands to reach towards the amputated stump, she massaged the joint. It was the first time she’d physically touched her injury, it had been easy to ignore and cast to the side but suddenly it felt real. Feeling helpless, as she had done so many times over the last several days, she surprisingly found herself longing for her friends . . . a longing that made her feel pathetic and uncomfortable.
Chestnut eyes burst into a soft pastel pink as Xi’an’s mutant power of bodily possession activated. Normally composed and controlled, she’d rarely had issues with her abilities. Yet, they seemed to know what was best for her as she felt her mind freeing itself from her frail body. It happened in a flash, as was the way with her power, and she soon found herself staring out of the eyes of another. Awkwardly peering around her, Xi’an could see Illyana, Amara, Roberto and Julio. It was enough for her to realise she’d been transported into Danielle’s body. They seemed to be in a stadium somewhere and, despite earlier readings of Cerebro, they were definitely on Earth. It was then that she noticed, ahead of her friends stood the menacing Demon Bear.
The view went back as she was shunted backwards through the astral plane, Danielle had freed herself.
As the shades of pastel pink faded from her eyes, returning to a soft chestnut colour, Xi’an found herself returned to the amputated body she’d been so desperate to escape. Her anger sweated through every pore as she focused on the glimpses she’d had of the New Mutants amidst what seemed to be a football stadium and the Demon Bear she’d once thought they’d already faced and defeated. Despite the abandonment she felt, Xi’an knew that their pasts had all come back to haunt them, not just hers and as she worried for her friends, she was reminded of the stakes in the world that she’d forced them into once again.
“Found you.”

Costume reveal!
One of the things that can often define a superhero, or the team they're associated with, is costuming. The New Mutants have remained the exception to that rule since they've rarely ever managed to expand beyond the traditional yellow and black/blue training suit of X-Men students. In the aftermath of the Into the Badlands arc, the New Mutants will be clamouring for an identity that indicates who they are now and I looked through their canon costumes to find out what they might be (it seems that I felt Clay Mann did the best job at reinterpreting their older identities).
My rationale? Magma is returning to her Grecian roots, her costume is primal and militaristic. She's the most feminine of the characters and it makes sense that she would choose something that would expose her body. Karma's costume draws directly from her recent amputation, it's sleek and metallic. Her hair will be longer in the series than the image. I think, as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, it makes sense that her costume would be whole. Sunspot will be powered up, otherwise his costume is very 90s Iceman with just a pair of shorts. Mirage, much like Amara, returns to her roots as a Native American. Her costume is equally earth-toned and practical for her cultural background as a hunter and gatherer. It's safe to say that Mirage's costume in New Mutants will likely not match the one she wears in Force Works. Magik is going dark and demonic. It's leather, it's tight and aerodynamic, she can move quickly and her Soulsword lets her pack a punch. Rictor is going rock and roll again, it's X-Terminators all over again, and he's gonna be shaving and tidying up that facial hair. He's younger than the others and I don't think that's come across yet.
This is more of an aesthetic update, since I don't want to spoil anything from the upcoming New Mutants #4.
