Don't mind the April Fool's Day jokes tomorrow, because these issues are nothing to laugh at. Well, most of them. I mean, there are a few funny little tidbits in there, but we're laughing with these stories, not at them. ACTION COMICS #13 - Bizarro has kidnapped Jon to force him into his own twisted family, forcing Superman to take drastic measures to rescue him. Plus, another Superman Family Album back-up story. Written by Tobias Christopher! ELSEWORLDS #2 - The terrible Nazi forces were overthrown on Earth X by the combined might of Earth One's heroes with the Freedom Fighters...but what would have happened next if the Freedom Fighters remained on their own world? Written by Travis Hiltz! IMPULSE #10 - The Rogues have taken the new Impulse captive...or maybe he has them cornered? It's really all a matter of perspective, but it makes Bart gets his gear out once again. Written by Tobias Christopher! LEGION OF DOOM #6 - The League has been targeted, dispersed, and wounded. Now that they have a chance to rally, it's time to take the fight back to the organized villains. Written by John Cheese! RED HOOD: AMERICAN NIGHTMARE #1 - This special miniseries kicks off with Jason Todd tracking down a supplier that indirectly killed one of the only people he loved. A great accompanying story to the ongoing series. Written by Jake Hawkins! RED HOOD & THE OUTSIDERS #4 - As Amanda Waller runs down the list of her new Task Force X candidates, unwilling as they may be, she suddenly find herself the target of a very angry Talia al Ghul. The Red Hood has already been dispatched, but will there be a casualty anyway? Written by Jake Hawkins! THE SHADOW #4 - Wounded, the Shadow is taken back to his safe residence, but a curious young woman is already there waiting for him. As he recovers, he experiences a vision that will change the man he is. Written by D. Golightly! TEEN TITANS #4 - Fresh from a victory, the Teen Titans are confronted by not just one, but several people that thought long dead. Written by Patrick Moore! TRUTH OR DARE #1 - Twin acrobatic sisters driven to a life of crime, under the control of Blockbuster, until something horrible happens. Now with one sister remaining to overcome a tragedy, will her life now steer toward crime...or revenge? Written by John Cheese!

And here we go with an April release for DC 2000. With my own personal reason to be happy about DC 2000 related events this should bode well for my upcoming reviews. But after reading them will I be left smiling or frowning at what I found. Let's find out...
Also beware Spoilers for Shadow #5
Action Comics #13 - So after banishing Bizzaro John to the Phantom Zone I can finally enjoy #1s antics. To be honest Bizzaro is just the kind of character who can excel under Tobias Christopher's penmanship although I do worry that his son is going to cause a lot of trouble for him. As for the Justice League emergency, I'm really looking forward to see what's going on there. And while I don't mention the family album stuff so much, it seems like Lana's brothers are the most evil villains that Superman has ever faced since they actually seem to be willingly committing murder. Let's hope the Action continues as we march into May.
Rating - 8/10 (Smile)
Crisis on Earth XX - I'm always curious about the Elseworlds titles that come through to the surface. They always seem to be entertaining, and Travis Hiltz's tale is no exception. The Freedom Fighters is an interesting quartet which as the authors notes stated, did remind me a lot of the Fantastic Four. They weren't the only stand out characters with the Under Dwellers really stealing the show, especially with their pet dinosaurs. In all honesty this particular title (with a few modifications) could easily slip into the general continuity. Hopefully this won't be the last time we see the Freedom Fighters and their amazing adventures.
Rating - 9/10 (Smile)
Impulse #10 - Despite Inertia not wining a Tookie, Impulse doesn't seem to have suffered to much. Unlike the Rouges who seem to have been subjected to a fate worse then death (in this case being stuck in the mirror dimension with a jittery Jase. Like all Tobias Christopher titles the character interactions are written perfectly, although I feel that this issue was a wee bit short. Still it looks like we're getting a big helping of life stuff coming up very soon which should make good reading, and of course is something I'm really looking forward to reading.
Rating - 8.5/10 (Smile)
Red Hood and the Outlaws #4 - Between the Seven Men of Death, the Suicide Squad and the Outlaws we have a lot of killers in one place in #4 of Jake Hawkins Red Hood title (well one of two). And while the Hood and his cronies should be the stars of the issue, it's the Suicide Squad that really diverts the attention of the reader (or at least this reader). We are also left with out first glance of John Constantine and AMAZO, both characters that I suspect will have big parts in the future. And luckily if you have a Red Hood craving, there is a fix right around the corner...
...In the form of Red Hood: American Nightmare #1 - I must admit, I don't like the Red Hood in the mainstream DC comics. It's nothing to do with the character but with the unnecessary amount of hype that surrounds him. Fortunately Jake Hawkins has rectified that with his titles here on DC 2000. While the Outlaws series has a degree of fanaticism to it, American Nightmare feels very gritty, like its down there in the dirt which, while not a surprise, makes it stand out from everything else released besides the Shadow. While there is some timeline distortion, it doesn't throw the story off that much, hopefully we'll see more very soon.
Rating - 8.5/10 for Outlaws and 9.5/10 for American Nightmare (Smile x 2)
The Shadow #4 - Speaking of the Shadow, its Dave Golightly's noir title up to bat next and boy is it scoring a century (and you thought this was a baseball metaphor). While it seems to be the last issue of the title for a while, the idea of duality in heroes gets taken to the nth degree with the reveal of two Lamont Cranston's although with a name like the Shadow it seems less of the awesome twist it was while reading in hindsight. Whatever the case, the title plunged into territory that no one else had entered and became a firm favourite of mine. Let's hope we'll see a return of the Shadow soon.
Rating - 9.5/10 (Smile)
Teen Titans #4 - Teen Titans to be honest felt a little clunky in comparison to the other titles, and I'm not sure if it's because the title is short, because Patrick Moore won't commit to long pieces of narrative or simply a mixture of both. The storyline is a good one, with Neron and Deathstroke making their move, but ultimately it gets let down by the points I mentioned above. It's a shame because this title could be great, and has all the things it needs to evolve into something awesome. Hopefully it'll germinate into what we all know it could be very soon.
Rating - 7/10 (Smile)

I wanted to make American Nightmare the polar opposite of outsiders, and restore the Judd Winick version of Jason not the cookie cutter merch hawking iteration Scott Lobdell has been writing for years

Sure, it may just be my problem, but I like descriptive narrative that flows smoothly. Have no doubt that the calibre of the title will do nothing but climb.

Jake Hawkins is one of my favorite writers and Outsiders didn't disappoint. I will probably give it a Tookie nomination next year. This issue is insane with action. The Constantine appearance made Rob's voice from Comic's Explained say, "What!" The whole concept of Belle Reeve being under swarm and Waller and crew giving pardons just for the defense was very unique. I loved it.
