Legion of Doom - Endings, beginnings and everything inbetween. This was a great series and John managed to nail every character perfectly to the point where I honestly was scared that Supes was going to die even though I knew better. It was sad seeing the death of certain characters, but hey, who stays dead in comics (or fanfic for that matter). And now thanks to John's fantastic writing, I have a brand new plot thread to play with in Action Comics. Can't wait to see where the League goes from this point on.

Action comics has been a complete blast since I’ve fonally hunkered down and got current. Needless to say it’s making me want to do that legion story I’ve always had in the back of my head

So we come to another DC 2000 release, in this case a quick three issue entry before the deluge that is Villains Month. But will the issues reviewed here be left high and dry or be condemed to the depths. Wow even I'm unsure what's the better of the two here...any who let's begin.
Action Comics #16 - The look at one of the old classic comic storylines, in this case would the world be better off without adults, is asked once agaim. Even though this storyline has been done before, Tobias makes it feel fresh with his classic character interactions. We alsohave Toyman's reappearance whic muddies the water just a bit. Watch out King of Fables because the new storyteller in chief is here.
Rating - 9/10 (High and Dry)
Batman #6 - Batman is just as much about, if not more so, the psychological effect the Dark Knight"s rouge gallery has on him. This time it's Dave Golightly and Dr Zodiac taking a swing at our titular hero with an almost 'What If' quality. That alone caused the title to stand out, especially since each 'deadly doctor' seems to be setting things up gor the next. So until Dr Zodiac actually gets a ScD keep on Batmaning Dave.
Rating - 9.5/10 (High and Dry)
Impulse #12 - It's always a risk bringing a character whose so obsessed with something so obviously wrong. They often become a caricature of themselves, but in the case of Cody it works, making him seem cruel. Itseems Tobias is taking a big risk gpi g the opposite direction and undeveloping a character, but at the moment its working.
Rating - 8/10 (High and Dry)

ACTION COMICS #16 - I remember Mark Waid's Queen of Fables JLA story. Didn't care for it too much. This story is more entertaining!
IMPULSE #12 - I'll be honest, this moved a little slow. I'd like a story about a speedster to move a little faster.
LEGION OF DOOM #9 - Nice setup for the JLA title coming down the line!
TRUTH OR DARE #4 - I enjoy seeing Dixon-era b-list villains getting some of the spotlight.

That issue of Batman was damn gripping. I really enjoyed Dr. Zodiac and this Batman running the gauntlet has the pro wrestling lover in me gripped to his seat. Well done

I really love how John has set up his Justice League series to be so unique and fresh. And to do something like that you need to launch it with a title as twisting and impactful as Legion was

Wow didn't know I was providing plots and storylines to other people. Those words about getting characterisation right means a lot, particularly on the JLA side of things since I'm predominantly a villain writer, at least until October/November and the start of my Justice League run. So a big thank you for your coment, it is most appreciated.

I think without Legion of Doom I wouldn't have got my Justice League pitch past Dave. For the moment the members of the Legion not named 'the Titan' are up for grabs, and looking for their moment to strike back.

Quick Fire Thoughts on…
Batman #6: Hospital of Pain: Part 2
Holy crap Dave, you’re a fricking mad genius of something, because this issue spun me out in ways I just wasn’t ready for today. I loved the duality technique that represented Batman’s duel memories, which was a great way to represent his spiralling confusion, and driving home the danger he was in.
Damian and Selena are also working really well off each other, and while I’m not typically a huge fan of this Robin, the obnoxious little brat is far more tolerable here than I’ve generally been exposed to in the past.
This is the sort of thing that lights a fire under my own ass to try my best to keep up my own standards on Batgirl, as this is the sort of bar I need to be aiming for. Which also reminds me, you’re Batman is catching up with Batgirl’s numbering!!
Can’t have that.
*shake head*
P.S. The reference to Stephanie made me perform a little happy clap.
*nod*

Quick Fire Thoughts on…
Legion of Doom #9
If there is one thing that I am always worried about when it comes to my own writing, it’s whether or not I’ll be able to ‘stick the landing’. As it happens, with the final issue of Legion of Doom, our very own Mr. John Cheese has been able to do exactly that.
Legion of Doom has been a roller coaster ride from start to finish, and carries itself with a genuine sense of being DC2K’s first, real ‘event’ so to speak, with repercussions that could be felt across the entire brand (it certainly has me thinking!). It started big, and it finished big, with plenty of surprises along the way.
Hard hitting and making no compromises, the stakes felt real and the resulting fallout felt like a natural extension of the events that happened. It’s been a wild ride, and the Justice League series hasn’t even started yet…

It’s been a wild ride, and the Justice League series hasn’t even started yet… First of all thanks for the review that is most appreciated. I would agree with you, the endings of stories are always the hardest, its something I continuously worried about. I actually produced three different endings for Legion of Doom before I settled on the one that was, to me at least, the least unwieldy and disappointing. I never considered LoD to be an event when writing it, and would never have said so after the ending until I re-read the series, but actually I can see it in some aspects being so. I'm also glad that I can inspire future story lines and that the finish was big (but then this is 'The Titan' we're talking about, a guy who gives Crossfire of V4H a run for his money as most villainous villain. Once again thank you for commenting on this wild ride and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I think this Robin is better used a little toned down from his prime counterpart. I don't need to see a tween chopping people's heads off. I do need to see him being overly aggressive and being, perhaps, too self-assured. He sees Batman and like any child thinks, "I'm going to be just like him," but in his case he thinks he's already at that level.
