As is the realm of fan fiction, people come together to write characters they know and love (some decades old, others five minutes after being announced). However, I was wondering how most people felt on the remit of introducing original characters and the prominence they could then play within these series? Not everyone is comfortably with introducing new characters, preferring to find canon characters with background that can be built upon. I thought it could be a pretty interesting talking point to discuss.

I love them, provided that they are done well. It's fun to bring in someone totally new, develop them, and make them central to a story. I also LOVE original villains. Bring in a new threat!

Not going to lie anyone not named Nero or Senor Magico in a certain series are original characters...

I tend to separate the two. Fanfic is where I go to play with other people's toys. I focus on creating original characters when I'm telling my own stories.
There are times when I need a specific type of character for a fanfic story, and can't find it or it's unavailable then I'll create a character, but I prefer to pour through my back issues and find what/who I need instead.

Like Travis, I try to keep original characters reserved for if I can't get ahold of a canon character who's being used elsewhere. Or if I'm trying to fill a void that Marvel/DC has yet to fill, like the current DC2K Impulse, who was created to form the new YJ-like triad with the new Robin & Superboy.

I love original characters when created organically (i.e. no Mary Sues or Mary Stus, lol) but when done right it can be not unlike a proud parent might feel to see a character you created not just fit in with but thrive alongside the classic characters of your childhood.

I remember that M2K did have for a short time a new Marvel Girl series with a OC taking the mantle. And who and ever forget Moo's Moon Man?

There were at one point plans at MO for Peter Parker to retire and a new OC Spider-Man to take up the mantle (this was before Miles Morales was a thing). I never got to reach that milestone issue when I could make that happen, at least not yet.

I used to be against them in general, but as time passed and plot needs changed, so have my opinions on the subject. Marvel and DC have some big holes, IMO. With Marvel, I feel that the villains largely fall into three categories. Masterminds (Doc Doc, Dr. Doom, etc), everyman villains (Shocker, Hydraman, etc) or gimmick sociopaths (Bullseye, Sabretooth, etc). Professional/mercs villains are few and far between (Cheese grabbed a few ), so I created some for later use
