Justice League Dark: Hmm...very interesting. I love to read issue ones to see how any writer develops their series. Gavin's use of his characters definitely have me on edge to see how this 'team' develops and definitely has questions with characters. With DC2Ks open starting point, it opens up with a very popular character revealing his origin of not only in the DC2K but of the character as well. The use of Echantress was spot on and Gavin had me feeling like Mr E is either a really big douche bag or the character who unintentionally resembles Constantine in demeanor. The insecurities of the new Dr Fate, as it was described, has me wondering who Nabu has selected as his champion, because it definitely is not Kent Nelson. Is it Kent V? Hector? Khalid? With DC2Ks open starting point, it could be Eric and Linda for all that the readers know. The only thing I do know is that it isn't Kent or Izna by how the character acts under pressure. The whole point of it not being Kent Nelson as classic Fate supports the teams theme even more. Gavin has set this series up quite well for himself or any writer after him. With the brief appearances of Nightshade, I wonder if you plan to use Eden and Moon's Suicide connection? Gavin has a very stable and focused purpose of the team which I can see will easily make the series last for quite some time if Gavin so chooses to do so.
question: with this issue being the origin issue of Blue Devil, do you envision Blue Devil in classic form or the more slimmer Rebirth Blue Devil. It isn't a big deal, but was just curious.
edit: it just dawned on me that the use of Etrigan and Echantress use of grammar could be very daunting to any writer. You have both of them. As someone that will read the series, I hope that is not the case for you but I am sure everyone here has faith in your work.

As someone that will read the series, I hope that is not the case for you but I am sure everyone here has faith in your work. Wow. Thank you! I'll start off by saying that I'm incredibly glad you enjoyed the layout of the team. I did struggle with it initially, which was part of the reason for the delay as well as focusing on my university work, but I think by the time I finished the issue I'd managed to work a voice for most of them. Issue two should solve the others, as well as introduce most of the remaining foes for this arc, and then I believe the series will be in a much better shape. Still, it's always great to have someone praise your work and it's even better after a struggle! I'm finding the title much easier to write now so it should be more consistently updated. Enchantress is a favoured character of mine so you can expect her to spend plenty of time in the limelight. As for Mister E, I do see that he's coming off as something of a low-rent John Constantine, but there'll be moments in the future were you see why he's such a douche and why he's allowed himself to be dragged in ARGUS and the ranks of Justice League Dark. There'll still be similarities to Constantine but he's also very much his own man.
Doctor Fate may not have been selected as you might imagine. Originally there was a plan in place for both Ed Ainsworth and I to use the concept of the Helmet of Nabu that changed it a little from the standard story and, as Ed is unfortunately no longer on Metropolis, Jake will be assisting me with that story in his own title. I'm surprised I didn't mention who was using the mantle in the issue, it must have slipped my mind since it was an action piece, but it's listed on the dibs list so I see no reason to keep it a secret: Khalid Nassour is Doctor Fate. However, he's not been the only Doctor Fate in the DC2KU. His inexperience and lack of skill will play a role in future issues, as well as the choices he's required to make.
Enchantress and Nightshade won't have served together in the Suicide Squad in the DC2KU but you will definitely see them interact. Obviously one is a main character and the other is not, but there will be Moone/Eden scenes in the future. Not until the current crisis has fizzled out a little bit and the team can breathe.
Blue Devil is the much slimmer version of the character. He's in opposition to the burlier Etrigan. A testament to demon's coming in all shapes and sizes. And I'm glad you're enjoying the dialogue of Etrigan and Enchantress, it takes a moment to think about but their scenes normally appear fully formed in my head as I'm developing the breakdown of the issues.
Once again, thank you for the review and I hope you continue to enjoy the series! It's exciting to delve into DC2K's mystical world.

Had a chance to check out this release finally. First thing first, Tobias continues to excel at writing Clark and family. He's done more with his ensemble than Bendis has showed any interest in doing. As I look at a lot of the stuff Tobias is writing here and elsewhere, he's getting the family dynamic of juggling multiple characters and their perspective arcs to a science
Truth or Dare #5 and what else can I say but I love this little section of Bludhaven and the world building in this issue was top notch. Dare continues to be a character than I can invest in which will keep me coming back for more. So happy John got his releases out this month. Hope you're good buddy!
Justice League Dark was everything I needed from this title and a little more. Not familiar with Mister E and Blue Devil, so I'm ready to see what Gavin has in store over the long haul. A Doctor Fate being a part of the team is an absolute must, and the dynamics of this particular group sells itself.

A history of Mister E and Blue Devil isn't required, giving the Rebirth-element of the site I'll be establishing all of their origins and personalities over time. I do love team books because of the dynamics, and the dynamic with this particular Doctor Fate may be different than you're used to so I hope you enjoy what's in store.

Apologies for the late reviews, currently headed up to Stansted to fly out for a funeral in the Czech Republic and will be flying back Friday morning for another one that afternoon. Due to all kinds of stress all the usual flair has bern left out. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Action Comics #17 - Tobias Christopher always spins a good tale, and Action Comics #17 was a nice wrap up for the King of Fables Arc, one that seems to have real consequences for the regular cast both on the A & B side stories. What's more the next arc has been set up perfectly with a crossover with Emma Woods, something which should be a meteoric story as two of the top writers on the site join forces.
Impulse #13 - And we continue with Tobias's story with Impulse. This issue felt very centred on Risk and Mindwarp's relationship, which was heart warming but also heartbreaking as we saw said relationship break down. But then this is what Tobias exceeds at, he writes relationships exceptionally well. Hopefully we'll see more of this title and it's teen cast very soon (maybe even in Bludhaven [one can hope]).
Justice League Dark #1 - The big release this month belongs to Gavin McMahon with Justice League Dark and its eclectic cast of magic users. A cast I may add, that appears already to be at each others throats as their different ideologies clash. Expertly written, especially how difficult the dialogue of certain characters can be, I have two questions; is this Striga related to the Red Witch in anyway, and ehen is the next issue?
Red Hood and the Outsiders #5 - Red Hood continues much as it has brutally and sharply cutting it's way forward which suits this type of story just fine. Jake Hawkins (along with a few others) are very much the up and comming generation of Marvel 2000, whose work improves with each issue of theirs that is released. Hopefully we'll see more of his work here, and on Marvel 2000 very soon, with both his stories blossoming out into long lived and well written titles
The Shadow #6 - And finally we reach the grandmaster himself. As mentioned earlier Dave Golightly's 'The Shadow' is a unique piece, one that deals with a lot of complex ideas, without any of the familiar characters, very well making it very easy to read and then get hooked by. I always wonder where Dave plans to leave this title, its one I know must end but don't overly want it to. Hopefully Lamont Cranston will return soon in some capacity, its a much loved title and a great example of what latral thinking can come up with.

Thank you for the high praise. My intention with this series is much closer to the actual Justice League Dark. They've always been more dysfunctional than the regular Justice League. They aren't all in agreement but they know they have to be there to save the world. The next issue is underway so I'm very hopeful that it'll be released in September! As for Strega, Selena isn't connected to the Red Witch. In fact, Selena as Strega came to be because the Red Witch was busy elsewhere. However, for all intents and purposes, she fills that leadership role within Pentacle and is a much more severe and dangerous leader. Royals always look out for themselves. Thanks again, and I hope you enjoy what's to come!

JLDark #1:
There's a lot going on here and I think that might be my problem with this issue. We meet a big cast very quickly, a lot of whom we aren't sure what version you are using, then we get a bunch of villains and the set up for a big first story.
It's hard to get a handle on the heroes, I'm not real familiar with the bad guys and felt confused trying to keep track of everybody.
I like this cast, but I wish the gathering of the team had been slower.
and I'm sorry, but if the Enchantress isn't wearing her big green witches hat, then that automatically costs you points!
Now that I've pummeled you, let me tell you what I liked ( because I am looking forward to see where this story is going):
Interesting mix to the cast, like the novice Dr. Fate you picked, and really have high hopes for next issue, when the team breaks up into smaller groups.

I'm sorry that the setup of the issue wasn't quite to your liking, I simply wanted to get on with the story and have never been a fan of issues that drag out the team formation. If you're unsure about these characters, or the iterations of them that I'm using, that will become much clearer in the issue this month. They're split into two teams that will develop each of their dynamics and answer some of the questions you may have had about them. Now that the setup is over and done with, the series will be developed at a much more relaxed pace. You may continue to be disappointed with the Enchantress in that case, she won't ever be attired in a big green witches hat. She's a primordial lunar goddess, after all. You'll see a lot more of novice Doctor Fate and the difficulties his presence can cause.
I hope you enjoy what's to come!

No, witches hat! I'm outta here...!
Kidding, I'm kidding...
I get what you trying to do, I just think you tried to do too much. Bg teams are a juggle, and so much info made it harder for characters to hook me.
We may disagree on the start, but I am interested to see where this goes and hoping everyone gets their turn in the spotlight. This isn't a line up that ever would have occurred to me and I'm curious to see what you do with them.

Now that you mentioned it, did you have the idea to run all the JLD members as solo issues building up to issue one?

That was the plan. Kind of a Justice League Dark: Origins miniseries. It just hasn't come to fruition yet. Enchantress' issue is the only one that's mostly done. The first two issues of Justice League Dark drop hints about what would/would have happened in those issues. I might go back to that idea.
