I've been thinking of doing an Elseworld line of mini series with DC heroes teaming up with pulp icons like The Green Hornet, The Shadow, Doc Savage, Zorro, and even Flash Gordon. I started wanting to do a Batman X Green Hornet mini after the popularity of the Batman 66' and Green Hornet 66' TV crossover, until I stopped and now with the passing of Stan Lee I might be able to resurrect that mini. I did like Dave Golightly's version of the Shadow that maybe after I finish Batman/Green Hornet a Batman crossover with The Shadow could happen. I do plan on a Superman/Doc Savage mini as well.
Now which DC hero would you like to see crossover with in the pulp hero era?

Could be fun. Like the DC/HB one shots but featuring a pulp hero.

You should team up the Blue Beetle with the Green Hornet. Besides the similar names and cool vehicles they both had radio shows in the 40's.
Oh great, now you've got me thinking about it....I'm going to have a list by morning.

You know I never really got what Pulp was. I get the impression its a distinctly American thing, bit like Science Fiction with topless woman is a European thing...

The pulps were cheap prose magazines from the 30's and 40's. There were all kinds of adventure and mystery stories. A lot of heroes got their starts there: Doc Savage, the Shadow, Captain Future, about a dozen Tarzan clones and almost all of Robert Howard's characters etc Pulp originally referred to the cheap paper they were printed on, but came to refer to a type of hero or story and became an umbrella term for GA heroes that didn't originate in the comics.
Technically, the Green Hornet was a radio/serial hero, not a pulp hero, but he gets included. That sort of thing.
I could talk about this stuff forever, but that's the capsule history.

This talk of putting DC heroes and pulps together got me thinking and I am working on some ideas for more stories connected to my 'Hal Jordan on Barsoom' elseworld.

You know I never really got what Pulp was. I get the impression its a distinctly American thing, bit like Science Fiction with topless woman is a European thing... I always found pulp to be very American. Just as the concept of the penny dreadful is quintessentially British (it forayed into European with gothic noir elements but I always found it very British, very London). To that end, I viewed pulp as an American equivalent. Not that I’ve ever read enough to understand it’s core concepts.

Well, anybody that feels an urge to do more research about the pulps, I would be more then happy to suggest a reading list. Along with a ridiculous amount of comics, I also have many pulps jammed into my house. Too many, according to my wife.

I have a collection of e-books that are pulp like Green Hornet. I even got the Doc Savage/Shadow crossover in e-book form.

Yeah, there are crazy amounts of sources for finding pulps, both old school, actual books and e-books.
I was talking more about a list of what I consider, the good stuff. Once, I have imparted my wisdom, it's up to you guys to track the stuff down in your preferred format.
Which Shadow/Doc Savage story did you get?

I love me some golden age characters but for some reason that love never fully translated to pulp. I guess I've always been drawn to more fantastical characters and pulp heroes were usually more or less human. I always think to go back and give them a try though

Lots of masked mystery men and a few of them come close. Doc Savage is a human developed to the peak of physical/mental perfection. The Spider can take Wolverine levels of punishment and still keeps going. Captain Future has no super powers, but he lives on the moon and one of his sidekicks is a brain in a jar.

Right and the Shadow can maybe read thoughts or maybe he's just a pessimist who projects and is often right anyways lol Just never did much for me.

Lots of cool ideas, but the stories I've read were only ever just okay. He is the Batman or Wolverine of the pulps. I prefer the Spider myself.
