Personally, I always liked Betty ... Meriades did a great job with her at another site. Until she lost her face and became the new Chameleon. Ahem. There were no fridges involved, m'lord, honest... (I agree that Bryan's treatment of Betty here is superb, by the way.) I'll always vote Gwen. ASM # 121, where she died, was the first comic I ever read (goodness knows what kind of psychological attachment that spurred in me as a 5-year-old) but my real love of the character stems from Marvels and, especially, Loeb and Sale's gorgeous Spider-Man:Blue, which captured her to perfection. I've got nothing against MJ but Gwen was always the one Peter loved deep down. Sorry to all MJ fans, but it's true. Oddly, the only love interest since then (and tenuously so) I've ever really been taken by as a character was Joy Mercado. I couldn't begin to tell you why. Probably just a right time, right place kinda thing. But, I swear, if Joe Quesada and JMS had sacrificed MJ in Brand New Day so Pete could get together with Joy I actually may have forgiven them anything. Obviously, I have no integrity whatsoever.

All right, I will concede that Betty Brant is now and always will be Peter's best friend who happens to be a girl. Its how she's been written best by every writer that's used her, especially Bryan most recently.
Gwen, sadly, I was only really exposed to by the JMS story. Damn that bastard for blighting Gwen forever in my eyes.
Meri, I think you'll need to give us all a little more background on Joy Mercado. I personally have never heard of her.

Meri, I think you'll need to give us all a little more background on Joy Mercado. I personally have never heard of her. Mid-to-late 80s, mainly used by Stern, DeFalco and Conway. Tough-as-nails reporter who thought Pete was a wastrel who could be a great photographic journalist if he put his mind to it. I used her in that AltMarvel ASM run, although only in the last few issues if I emember rightly. There's a full bio at: www.marvunapp.com/Appendix3/mercadojoy.htm

I've been a Spidey/Black Cat fan myself. They seem to work well together.

Wow. Thanks for all the praise for my Betty. She was always one of my faves.
I think the problem I've always had with Felicia was the fact that she can't seriously get with Peter. Peter's just...too normal for her. Does anyone remember that issue of ASM (or it might have been Spectacular) when Peter first revealed his identity to her? It went like this...
Peter: "My name is Peter. I'm actually a dork. This is who I am and you gotta deal with it if you want me."
Felicia: "Uh no. I liked you better with the mask on. This Peter guy? That's not going to work for me. Put the mask back on and make sweet sexy spidery love to me!"
Every interpretation of Felicia since then has forgotten that pretty much blew off Peter when he tried to express his true feelings for her. She was quite the bitch about it.
Besides that fact, is the fact that she is obviously a Selina Kyle rip-off.
And where's the love for Jean DeWitt?

I agree that Felicia's a horrible girlfriend for Peter. But she's my favorite character of all the women Peter's been involved with and I think that's where the difference comes in.
And yeah, she's obviously heavily inspired by Catwoman, but I never saw that as a negative. At one point, Batman was little more than The Shadow in a more elaborate costume.

I agree that Felicia's a horrible girlfriend for Peter. But she's my favorite character of all the women Peter's been involved with and I think that's where the difference comes in. There was certainly an unusual dynamic with the Peter/Black Cat dynamic, largely because she was more of Spider-Man's girlfriend than Peter's. I thought there were times when their relationship was handled better than others, though. I thought the scene where she finally sees what Peter looks like under the mask could have been handled much better, for instance. There are a lot of things that are derivative with Batman and the Shadow, and the creators of the character were admittedly inspired by the Shadow, as well as some of the other pulp-era heroes. I agree with you. I like the Black Cat as well. She's not my favorite of Spider-Man's girlfriends, but in many ways, you could make the argument that their relationship was the most interesting (or at least unusual). And, I believe there is a lot of potential with the character.

I've got nothing against MJ but Gwen was always the one Peter loved deep down. Sorry to all MJ fans, but it's true. That sums up my feelings perfectly. I like MJ just fine, I like Betty, and I do think the Black Cat is a neat character, but Gwen was Peter's true love.

As a kid of the 90's and the 00's I love MJ and Peter's relationship. I've never quite understood why some people fell in love with Gwen if you only read The Night that Gwen Stacy died. Because she literally has no speaking lines. Once I sat down and read a lot of the silver age Spider-Man I sort of got it. She was a decent character who met a tragic end. Now is she the love of Peter's life? For me, no. To me she has become less of a character and more of a martyr for writers who grew reading this era to loom over Peter head, she became Saint Gwen. When in reality she was anything but. For my money MJ was a little more fun and dynamic character. Which is probably one the reasons Romita gave Gwen, MJ's hairstyle. MJ never fell into the silver age girlfriend isms. She stood outside of out, since she was more of a bronze age character.
