[glow=red,2,300]SHIELD: EXTERMINATION FORCE #1 by Mark Walsh
THE GOOD: Well, Mark definitely sets up a pretty bleak world here and he doesn’t even have to use a big pile of bodies to do it. Just the whole setting of this alternate reality seems pretty damn desperate. Every cast member seems to have a lot of depression going on and the point was really driven home for me when the guys toasted to a now dead Kurt Wagner, who seems to have committed suicide. The whole idea of mutant powers being explosive and out of control does hold some merit because far too often newly emerged mutants just easily reign in their powers.
THE BAD: I know this is a first issue and all, but I have the feeling that this title might suffer from repetitiveness very quickly. You can only hunt down so many mutants and kill them before it becomes a bit of a yawn. I would strongly suggest that there be some kind of antagonist in place for these SHIELD guys. Someone or a group of someones who are their opposite.
OVERALL: A decent first issue and the setting of this world was put together nicely without having to use any gross amount of death and maiming. [/glow]

Hey, thanks a lot for this. If the rumored "Cruel Entourage" is going to be showing up at Castavel in a couple days, I'll have to respond in kind.
And I completely agree that one extermination after another would wear thin fairly quickly. Issue two should begin to alleviate those concerns.
Actually, by pure coincidence, that threat will give my answer to a "what if" question that one of the posters here asked before the first issue of SHIELD even debuted. Either great minds do think alike, or, more likely, you're all stalking me.
Thanks again, Brent.

I just finished reading the issue and I loved it. I love dark stuff and I'm thinking this title is going to get very dark very quickly. Love Sabretooth on the team - he's the perfect casting choice for the type of book that I hope this will shape into.
The only thing I didn't like about the issue was the characterization of Storm. She used to be a soldier? Or her dad was a soldier? Both? Anyway, she seems waaaay too weak-willed for this series. I understand that she's supposed to be the reader's eyes and ears in the title, experiencing SHIELD for the first time. I just think she comes across as a five year old hanging out with teenagers.
Other than that, the first issue was awesome and I look forward to #2.

Hmm, thanks for the thoughts. Now that I consider it, you're right, there does seem to be some problems with Ororo's backstory and current personality. I'll try to toughen her up a bit, while still conveying her complete shock over the situation.
