Ben Wolfert gave me a buzz this morning and asked if I'd read Marvel Fantasy yet. Now I've known Ben somewhat since his first days in fanfic. He might not even recalls this, but shortly before I left the original MRev and the group folded shortly thereafter, I recieved a prop for an X-Factor series by Ben. I was impressed by the young writer, and his willingness to break the mold set for the title (X-Factor was a SHIELD team that was mostly mutant, but inclded Darkhawk and Speedball as well). I've been impressed by his recent work also, particularly on Av2K's X-Men (although I'm a bit behind on the series). When he asked if I'd read it, I realised I really should. :-) I was pleased by the result.
These two issues are part of the continuing story of Scott Summers as he explores his vast (alternate) world at the side of Stephan Strange. We're also introduced to this world's Fantastic Four and Spider-Man in #5, although neither have been through the life-changing events they're famous for.
The good- Ben does a good job at crafting his world. Young Scott's awe at the airship in #4, or the Parker home in #5 are both elloquently described, giving this alternate world a great sense of reality. Ben also does a great job with his characters. Even though King Steven Rogers only appears briefly in #4, the reader knows he carries a great weight and misses his old life of adventure- without ever seeing anything from his perspective.
The bad- The title is Marvel Fantasy, but these two issues don't seem to capture much of the fantasy. It's hinted at though, so the reader knows it's there, and I have a feeling that the upcoming arc may remedy that. Also, the issues are short, and leaving you wanting a bit more, which isn't entirely a bad thing.
Overall- Good issues, will definitely check out more later.
Rating- Three of five punches thrown.
