I was stunned today to discover "The Return of the Age of Amalgam" in my university's library. Since the graphic novel section was so densely Vertigo (and oddly every single CrossGen trade), it was a suprise.
My question- has anyone ever considered revisiting the Amalgam-verse? Did anyone even read these specials?
I personally thought they were a lot of fun. Joey Q was right in that it was in a time of complacency in the industry, and creativity was kind of lulled at the time but some of these specials... You've got Wieringo and Landronn drawing Spider-Boy stories, Mark Waid doing Super-Soldier (or was it Dave Gibbons... it's been so long), Byrne on Amazon, Hitch drawing X-Patrol, and a whole lot more! That's a lot of talent for a potentially lame event.
Anyways... thought it'd be a fun topic.

I enjoyed a lot of those specials. X-Patrol and Dark Claw were a lot of fun, but nothing can compare to the awesomeness that was Speed Demon.

Was Speed Demon in the last batch? When I edited the "Amalgam Presents" title at Marvel-X, I received three separate proposals involving Speed Demon. It was actually pretty cool.

I think it was in the first. It was a cross of Ghost Rider, Etrigan, and Flash. Very serisously awesome reading.

One: I LOVED Amalgam, and would love to run with that world. Would love to.
Two: IIRC... In the first string of Amalgams, the Speed Demon was carnival stuntman Blaze Allen. The Night Spectre asked Blaze to serve in his task to collect souls of great power, but he refused. So on his wedding day, Blaze's wife's soul was nabbed by Spectre - he aligned himself with Merlin, then, who bonded him to the demon Etrigan so he could contend the Night Spectre. Speaks only in rhymes, breathes hellfire, runs super-fast. (Fun fact: Etrigan was originally a cursed human by Night Spectre, named Jay Garrick.) The first string also showed Speed Demon II - Wally West. (I'd figure they'd at least name him Dan West or Wally Ketch or something, but ahwell.) The Speed Demon, Wally's uncle Blaze Allen, ran off to save Iris one time. Little did he know Blaze was about to die, when Merlin appeared to Wally and offered him the same deal; with a different demon than Etrigan, Wally was bonded and became a non-rhyming demon of power, while Night Spectre banished himself into a human host in a bid for power. Unknown what demon Wally has; maybe even the Night Spectre.
Gosh, I love Amalgam...

Dark Claw and Spider-Boy aside, I'm actually not too familiar with the Amalgam universe. I remember a lot of the characters and concepts, but I just never read that much. I do dig your guys's enthusiasm and interest, though. If you guys are interested, how 'bout we launch a limited anthology for the Alternate Branch? Something along the lines of "Amalgam Revisited," containing a few one shots or short story-arcs starring our favorite characters? I'd be down for a Spider-Boy story.

I would love to do a Speed Demon story. Count me in for that anthology.

Spider-Boy remains, to me, one of the most fun stories I had ever read. Clones were actually fun! And somehow, in one issue of Spider-Boy Team-Up, all the continuities of the Legion of Super-Heroes got to shine. Legion of Galactic Guardians 2099! I dare you to think of the roll-calls without smiling.

Oh, I am now so tempted.
Yeah, definitely.
I just don't know what. I mean - Judgment League Avengers? The World's Finest Untold Tales (Dark Claw & Super Soldier)? Dark Claw? Super Soldier? I'm so torn.
Maybe even Iron Lantern...
Argh, torn!
I'm v. tempted towards Judgment League, but I need to do more 'solo books'...

Well, I won't be able to contribute until around January or February being that I have a few other commitments to tackle, so I say take your time picking and choosing. It'd probably be a couple of months before we actually launched this sucker (unless Golightly and Tony, who's still up in the air, get their issues finished way before us).
As for what I think you should write? Judgment League for sure!

Oh, and i could totally write a Speed Demon story in a flash. Depending on when you can get a Speed Demon story done, I think we could probably launch this sucker (tentatively called "Amalgam Revisited") in December or January. I know that Bowie and I are good for January, and I may be able to start this Spider-Boy story earlier than I anticipated (my enthusiasm is growing). When do you think that you'll be able to start your Catsai story, Meri? The logistics will need some working out and I'd like to have at least a couple of issues ready before launch, just to play it safe. The way I see it is that this title could be a "limited anthology" of sorts, depending on how much interest it garners. If we can only get four or five stories lined up, awesome, we'll just label it "Complete." If people show a continuing interest in the series and submit requests to write for it then we could always extend the title's life span indefinitely.
