What?: Liberty Legion #1-2
By Who?: Michael Norwitz
THE STORY: Michael takes us back to the time of the Invaders and introduces us to the Liberty Legion, sort of like the Avengers for the 1940's. They answer to FDR and protect America from all sorts of threats. In the first two issues this includes a riot and a sort of rival American team, the All-American Squadron.
THE GOOD: Michael does a nice job taking us back to the 1940's. He captures the feeling of the era pretty well for the most part. This clearly shouldn't be a typical super hero book, and it certainly isn't my any means. The characters and their personalities are more dated, as well they should be. These aren't intergalactic battles...they fit very well into the climate of the era. The battle against the All-American Squadron was also pretty well done.
THE BAD: Michael's writing, especially the dialog in issue one, can be rather choppy. There are periods of great description and then very little. The sentence structure seemed off at times, which made the reading a bit more difficult. In issue two things became a bit hard to believe. A 200 mile long tapeworm? Ok, if that were the case, why did they breed it inside of the United States? How would they transport it? And I understand there were bigots and conservatives in the US at the time...but for every member of the AAS to be that conservative is sort of crazy...at least to me.
OVERALL: Might not be everyone's cup of tea. But clean up the writing a bit and keep the original ideas coming and you'll have a solid title.
