Alternate Unlimited #47 by Michael Norwitz[/u]
I've been a big fan of Mike's portrayal of the Captain Britain Corps recently. I used to love reading those old reprints of Moore's Captain Britain, and laughing as the entire Corps would show up. It was great fun trying to figure out what kind of world each Captain hailed from. My favorites were Captain Airstrip-One and Captain Albion (two Captains from two of my favorite English novels).
Kommandant Englander has probably been the most daring of Mike's portrayals (though Viceroy England was quite...exciting) . The nazi Captain Britain? Well, if there are infinite universes, then this was a logical one to explore.
The introduction of the Kommandant was well-done, even a little sympathetic to the nazi bitch. The revelations about the fate of two of her teammates was unnerving, and I thought that maybe the Kommandant was a bit too emotionless about it. But, then again, she's a nazi bitch.
This Sun Koh character... with his connections to Atlantis, I thought he was a corrupted version of Namor, who had aligned with the Nazis during WW2 instead of the Allies. But I did some googling, and to my surprise, he's a Nazi pulp character! What a great discovery! He's nonetheless an effective character exhibiting all the qualities you'd expect from a dictator: noble yet egotistical aspirations, and a quick wrath. And he's still a nazi bastard.
Blackbird was a great interpretation of Nightcrawler, and threatened to steal the scenes sometimes. His struggle to balance his secret identity with his own nobility (like Schindler) left me wanting more of him.
I didn't understand how the Gentlemen of the Air--all three of them--were supposed to be any match against Big Hero Six, and its not as though Mike made it a fair fight. The battle went exactly the way one would expect. And it's in space! I love fights in space! The conclusion to the issue was harsh, quick. But then again, it's exactly what you would expect from nazi bastards.
This was a great issue. I hope Mike keeps the Captain Britain Corps going in Alternate Unlimited... maybe even bringing them altogether in a grand Alternate Unlimited issue 50?
