I'm a bit behind on my reading at Marvel 2000, but things are slowing down substantially in my life as summer settles in, so I figured I'd play a little catch up. Along with that, I thought I'd write up some "Capsule Reviews" for some of the titles that have really caught my eye. First up is...
'70s Champions #3 by Jeff Melton
This issue wraps up Jeff's introductory arc, "Reunion." For those unfamiliar with the premise of the series, it picks up directly after the events of Champions #17 as if the year was 1978. Jeff uses his arc to set the atmosphere and tone of the series as well as reintroduce readers to the Champions team he'll be writing about. The threat of Gravitron was a good vehicle to do all of this with and I was happy to see that Darkstar was instrumental in bringing the villain's rampage to an end, even if Hercules and Ghost Rider did most of the heavy hitting. My only real disappointment with this arc was that we didn't see more of Black Goliath and that Gravitron didn't have a larger plan in mind, but on the plus side we did see some interesting developments in Ares' machinations and the purpose for Ivan's arrival in L.A. It's nice to see that Jeff's planning ahead with multiple storylines simmering away on the back burner. This type of story telling really helps to give the series layers and a sense of direction. We even get a hint that Black Goliath will be working on the mystery of The Vanisher's disappearance, which I feared would be forgotten by this arc's end. I dig it. Keep up the good work, Jeff!

I don't know how I missed this, but I appreciate you taking the time to read and review 70's Champions #3. I also appreciate all of the support you've shown for the series. As to your specific comments: 1) It is my intention to try to showcase the various heroes at different times. I like the original Champions line-up, and will be building a group around that base. And I will certainly try to give everyone a chance at the spotlight. I'm glad that worked with Darkstar, Hercules, and Ghost Rider this issue. Take heart with Black Goliath, though. I definitely like the character, and plan on giving him some attention in future issues. 2) Glad you like what I'm doing with Ares. That will definitely develop into a big story arc, and I'm glad the style is working for you. 3) As for Graviton, he's a major power hitter, and will likely be seen again. He manhandled the Avengers, and really has never been played up to his potential, IMO. 4) Vanisher will return as well. And you'll see some other interesting 70s-era guest stars in upcoming issues. I'm curious, especially, to see what you think of my use of some of these in particular.
