It is something we’ve all done. Missed the first part of a television program we wanted to see but started watching anyway, then spent the next twenty minutes trying to work out just what the hell is going on.
Well that was very much like the sensation I had when I started reading M2K Zombies #1 by Anthony Crute.
We are launched into the issue with the Runaways returning from a mission to the future, which sounded very exciting and to be honest I would love to see that story told at some point, to a deserted LA where they discover to their horror that the walking dead have overrun the city.
In Marvel Zombies it was the super-powered beings that had become the undead but here we get the normal people as zombies, which is a good idea I think as one of the most frightening thing about zombies is that while individually they might not be much of a threat, it is the sheer numbers they come at you with which lets them overwhelm you.
There is a lot to like in this first issue, Anthony nails the character of the Runaways cast perfectly, giving them the voices I image they would have and the horror of the situation the teens find themselves in is evident in every line.
The only problem I have with the issue is the leadership from Nico, who must be the worst leader of a team since the Wasp alienated her team members and almost let the Avengers get wiped out by the Masters of Evil.
Surely with two people capable of flying on the team and three capable of projecting flame/energy, the thing to do would have been for two of the energy projectors to lay down a suppressing fire while one of the flyers took the others to the roof of a building.
Still this is a very minor grumble and when confronted with the population of a city intent on eating you, you might not be thinking with a full tactical mind. This lack of leadership also sets up poor Chase (with the dinosaur Old Lace, a name which makes sense if you’ve ever read the comics) as the only survivor of the team.
Once man with no powers of his own against a country which is full of zombies?
I for one can’t wait for the next issue of this series.
