Jeff,
Just read Champions #5. I thought it was okay. I'm liking the way you incorporate the Winter Soldier, a modern charcater, into the 1970s.
I just thought it would be cooler if you construct and write your stories as if it was written in the 1970s and not the 2000s. I thought it might be more real that way. What I do is go to the library to read books from the 70s and use that as inspriation for my own stories.
Right now, I'm reading the Shaft books by Ernest Tidyman. It just seems that somehow in your writing you might be struggling with it. Remember you don't have to have mindless fighting in every scene. It is not about the costumes or the fights but the characters. In my stories I hardly have any battles but I deal with characterization. Makes it more exciting. You might also want to give some juicy subplots with the main characters. Love interests, marriages, love affairs. Like in the case of Ghost Rider, you might want to use Crash and his girlfriend, whats-her-face. I can't remember. It's been a while since I read a Ghost Rider comic.
I hope you don't find this to be an insult. I don't mean it that way. You should spice up the Champions. Do you watch Life on Mars? Y'know that cop show that takes place in 1973. That might inspire you.
Okay. I've said enough. Let me know what you think.

Greg,
Thanks for taking the time to read and give me our comments on the Champions. I'm having a lot of fun with the series, but do intend to be more specific with 70s references in future issues. There are some things that need to be handled first, including the return of the Winter Soldier. He'll have a prominent role in future issues, and there will naturally be an impact to his return.
I don't know what you mean when you say "mindless fight scenes", but I certainly have no intention of writing any fight scenes that don't make sense. The series will be more than fight scenes, and I think I've already shown some interwoven plots for future stories. But, this is a super-hero comic, so there will be fight scenes.
In future issues, I plan to showcase some 70s-era characters, and 70s-era groups, but I want the readers to have some fun with it, and that includes the fact that it is a 70s series. You'll see more characters from the Champions series returning, and some big name guest stars.
I don't know about the things you mentioned. I've never heard of "Life on Mars", but I've got plenty of memories from the 70s.

Jeff,
Sorry if I sounded harsh at times but when I wrote that message I was having a bad day and didn't mean everything I said. What I meant by mindless fight scenes was that I've seen a lot of movies recently that just deal with action and no plot.
Life On mars is a cop show on this season where a man from 2008 goes back in time to 1973 to be a cop in the 1970s. It is very good. If you have a chance to see it, I suggest you do so. It stars Harvey Keitel and Gretchen Mol. Keitel you will remember from Meanstreets, also from 1973.
But I am enjoying the series. I say keep on going and keep on plugging those issues. I think this series has promise. I am also enjoying Thor.
Again I wrote that message when I was pissed off at something, not you. Sorry about that.
