Title: Uncanny X-Men
Issue: 1 - X=?: Part 1: Give the People what they want.
Writer: Bryan Locke.
Warning: May Contain Spoilers.
I don't think this is much of a secret, but I've been looking forward to this Title for a good while now, waiting patiently as Bryan dropped the occasional issue of X-Men: Unlimited to wet my appetite. The longer I waited, the more anticipated I became and, unfortunately, as life has repeatedly reminded me, the more I look forward to something, the worse it usually turns out.
Well hot damn if that didn't happen this time!!
The Good:
Honestly, I simply loved this issue, so I could probably go on for a while, probably longer than I'm willing to write a review for, so I'll just go with what really won me over.
Bryan has a great grasp of character throughout the entire issue, taking each one in each scene and ensuring that they are infused with a unique personality. Theres alot of individual study going on here, looking at each person and giving us an insight into what makes them tick, where they're been, where they are and where they want to go. I actually feel like I know these characters better now than before I read this issue.
Bryan juggles a large cast with deceptive ease, if you like to see a lot of different faces, this is the place to be.
I also especially enjoyed the rendition of Mutant Town, the descriptions of its citizens and its atmosphere really bringing this small part of the city to life.
The Bad:
I don't really have anything to put here, move along.
Stand Out Point:
I'm really torn on this one so I'm going to opt for a tie.
The renditions of both Charles Xavier (Flashback, sorry, no resurrections) and Colossus really struck a chord with me. Charles for his clear enthusiasm during the closing of the issue and Colossus for his interactions with his wife and son, a family he is clearly cares for and loves dearly.
Which probably doesn't bode well for them...maybe I'm just being fatalistic.
Overall this is a really great read, probably the best Bryan Locke issue I've read to date. I can't recommend it highly enough.
