Gambit #3 (Vol. 2)
Written by Ryan Jent
If no one’s said it before I’ll say it now: Ryan writes an excellent Remy LeBeau, from his dialogue and inner-conflicts to his described mannerisms and fighting style. That said, Remy’s supporting cast in New Orleans has also been a great compliment to the character and have been instrumental in fleshing out his current state of mind. Ryan’s also done a good job with these last three issues bringing everyone up to speed on the Thieves and Assassins Guilds, and Gambit’s status quo in New Orleans – then pushing him forward into the new direction that Ryan and Bryan will undoubtedly build together for the character. I say undoubtedly because the ending of this issue already ties into what’s going on in Uncanny X-Men. I’m a buff for continuity, so that was nice.
My only real complaint? These last three issues have been a little sleepy in the action department (though Remy’s “fight” with Jean-Luc was a nice change of pace), but I’ll let that slide given that everything else in Ryan’s opening story was aces.
Hah! Get it? Aces? Erm… yes…
X-Force #27 (Vol. 2)
Written by Dino Pollard
This issue is a very fitting, if unexpected, finale to Dino’s run on X-Force. Pete Wisdom and company are unable to stop Shaw’s operation, but they are able to uncover and expose it. It’s apparent that Dino wanted to give his series a more practical and grounded ending, which works given X-Force’s cynical espionage roots. After all, the goal of gathering intelligence is to provide information, not necessarily to save the world, and that’s what has set his X-Force apart from other runs on the series from the very begin with. It’s a good way to go, especially given the numerous story possibilities provided by the massive shake-up of the title’s status quo, which has been a long time in coming.
Kudos to Dino on this one. It’s different, but like I said, it’s also fitting and accomplishes a lot more by shaking up the status quo then by having Pete Wisdom bust in Shaw’s head. Would some more action have been nice? Well, yeah, probably, but if you take this whole arc into account then there’s been plenty. Here’s hoping that another writer capitalizes on everything that Dino’s set up for them!
