Well I don't know Dave's daddy is, but mine is or was a nuclear engineer. As I continue my nocturnal work, I have another round of reviews this time for DC 2000 but will this result in a surge of positive power or a catastrophic meltdown. I have no idea, but let's find out...
(Warning Spoilers for Shadow #5 below)
Action Comics #14 - So Action Comics had a fair bit of action in it this month, not only bringing in the 'King of Fables' and whoever is trying to kill the prince during his interview with Lois Lane. The part that stole the spotlight however, was the 'family album' sections where we saw young Clark use his powers, albeit powers that come at the cost of Pete's legs. As always Tobias Christopher writes emotion and relationships very well, so much so that he could write a masterclass about it. Hopefully it will be a long time before the writer calls cut on this series.
Rating - 8/10 (Positive Power)
Batgirl #8 - Emma Woods brings Batgirl speeding towards an anarchic situation. But while Stephanie is the main character, it was the dichotomy between Ted 'Wildcat' Grant and Bettie Kane that steals the spotlight. It is quite clear that the characters both have different views on which way Stephanie should be heading and it will be quite interesting to see which way the neophyte Batgirl will head. Hopefully we'll see some more interesting members of the Bat Families minor rouges gallery ()and maybe some major ones too) soon as Stephanie becomes the great hero she's destined to be.
Rating - 9/10 (Positive Power)
Doom Patrol #5 - Man Doom Patrol is a weird title, but one that I am enjoying and that is a definite feather for Travis Hiltz's cap, especially since he included one of my favourite 'enemy of my enemy' trope. While I wasn't completely sure of what was going on (I said this was a weird title) what I could understand I enjoyed, especially Misour Mallah's role in this improvised team. With an interesting development and expansion of the team on the cards, I'm hoping I will have some time to understand this title and see it bloom in the weird and wild way that the writer wants to.
Rating - 9/10 (Positive Power)
Impulse #11 - Well the Green Cigarette wasn't quite the villain I was expecting to return for this issue, but it was an interesting confrontation. The real focus of the issue was Jase's return to school, which was both monumental and interesting, especially with the reaction of poor Carrol Bucklen who likely has had a hard time when Bart blew through school. In addition it appears as if Adam doesn't quite understand what is his and what isn't, putting that poor orphanage construction behind schedule. It's clear he needs to go back to school, but it's quite clear that Tobias Christopher has graduated into a full fledged writer with flying characters.
Rating - 9.5/10 (Positive Power)
New Gods #1 - New Gods, who needs New Gods. Apparently not New Genesis and Apokalips with the New Gods seeking refuge on Earth and trying to blend in with their new neighbours. Truly this series is very different and wasn't what I expected, not something that was necessarily bad. Dan Dolan should be proud of himself because he's managed to hook me with only a few paragraphs. I really hope that this series continues as it is and maybe sheds a little light on what has happened to cause two planets to become refuges on a backwards little rock like home.
Rating - 9.5/10 (Positive Power)
Red Hood: American Nightmare #2 - The continuation of Jake Hawking's American Nightmare touches on the very real issue of human trafficking which sets it apart from the other titles that deal with the more fantastical elements of both Marvel and DC. Not only that but the action between the Red Hood and both the Midnighter and Lady Shiva, and we get a slightly confusing look at the very network who seems to be operating in the background of this title. Hopefully this series will continues as a dream and not a nightmare in the near future.
Rating - 9/10 (Positive Power)
Teen Titans #5 - So the last few reviews I've been a little disappointed with the Teen Titans because of the quality of grammar, not so with this issue, Patrick Moore has not just fixed the problem, but has improved the quality of his writing by leaps and bounds. In addition we seem to have the stirrings for an interesting arc with Slade Wilson and the Terror Titans looking to take a chunk out of their enemies. Hopefully the increase of quality for this series will remain on a steady course towards the goal that the writer has set out.
Rating - 9/10 (Positive Power)
The Shadow #5 - And so we finally know who Lamont Cranston really is, and its a big surprise since he's a people smuggler with little love for mankind. Fortunately Kent Allard is not like that, and he's the heroic shadow who has stolen Lamont's identity, and is even risking his own identities by sharing it with Margot, who provides an easy way to tell the Shadow's backstory. With a now familiar (and disturbing) trouble on the horizon I hope that Dave Golightly continues pushing this title to a dramatic and brilliant ending.
Rating - 9/10 (Positive Power)

Thanks, Johnchesse. I do want to start my first year of Teen Titans with a epic run since issue 1. With what happened at the end of issue 5 and how the Titans will deal with the loss in issue 6, Slade and the Terror Titans are going to learn that the Teen Titans are forever. And Olive Silverlock is finally going to be coming back into the series since issue 1.

As usual Emma brings another awesome issue of Batgirl to DC2K. They way she can craft a story and the detail she puts into her work shows she has a love for Batgirl. I was always a fan of Steph as Batgirl back in the old DC days and this series just goes to show why she deserves the cape and cowl. I’ve recently dived into reading the JSA books and it reminded me why I’ve always liked Wildcat he’s always been one to watch over and help train the younger heroes and Emma brings all that into Batgirl as well. With the addition of Bette it does throw in another factor when it comes to how things work in Stephs world.
That end scene though...that made me remember the old days in the Bat Books with Tim and Steph being all smitten with one another. We’ve talked about Emma’s choice of not using certain parts of Stephs continuity from the DC Comics in her work and while at first I thought it was a mistake because certain things made her who she was but since then I’ve come around to DC2Ks Stephanie Brown aka the Batgirl!! I look forward to reading more and eventually maybe one day soon teaming up for a Bat Family Crossover.

Awww, you guys are making feel all kinds of special! *preen* Many *Hugs* for the Feedback, it’s always appreciated, and just makes me want to write all the more!! I’m glad to hear that you’ve enjoyed the supporting cast this issue, as I’m making a renewed effort as of late to bring them to the fore, and ensure they could conceivably exist outside of the bubble of Stephanie Brown herself. Much like Kara Zor-El over in my Sister Title, Girl of Steel, I feel like I have my protagonists down and multifaceted without having to give it much of a second thought, while the people around them can be... somewhat less so.
Hopefully my additional due diligence in this regard is paying off!! XD
Speaking of her Rogue’s Gallery... it does seem about time for matters to begin escalating...

I’m super glad that you enjoyed the issue, and hopefully it proved to be as adrenaline fuelled as I planned it to be, DC2K’s Batgirl making a splash on Gotham City as a whole. I adore Stephanie Brown/Batgirl from back in the day, so I’m glad to see that it’s paying dividends on the page in the here and now, especially since I was super stocked to find the opportunity waiting for me when I discovered DC2K, and additionally after I opted to take some pretty significant liberties with her pre52 continuity. I ultimately decided to reboot the character from day one which, to my benefit, granted me a great deal of freedom to tell entirely new stories from new directions (and ditch some of her shittier treatment at the hands of DC editorial), whilst retaining the core of the character. That being said, as you rightly pointed out, while this did enable me to jettison toxic continuity, a lot of great continuity vanished into the ether as well. However, what is old is new again, and many of those things that I did enjoy from the wayback machine can make a return in different and interesting ways as we join Batgirl on her new, DC2K journey. I can’t get enough of building Stephanie’s relationships from the ground up, be it with Ted Grant, Bette Kane, Dick Grayson, Tim Drake and many more, and seeing how they interact in this new world (and even across Titles), which is hopefully just as much fun for everyone else involved as it is for me. I’m super glad to hear that I have won you over with my creative decisions XD And I agree, Stephanie and Tim have always been adorable... we’ll just have to see what happens in the future of DC2K...

Truth and Dare #2 by John Cheese
Aliki aka Dare continues her quest for vengeance against those that took her sister and next on her list is Stallon. I’m gonna have to be honest and say that I have become a fan of Johns when it comes to his writing and his ability to take lesser known characters and craft excellent stories with them.
It’s interesting to see how Aliki is surviving in Bludhaven with the bare necessities and pretty much no financial means and she still moves forward in order to achieve her goals. The way John describes the way Aliki moves when she is fighting actually allows the reader to imagine the fight as it happens. She’s driven and you can tell she won’t stop till she crosses off every name on her hit list.
I have a couple questions though. The Contess? Is this a new character or based off the picture is this Jeanette the immortal from Secret Six? And since Soames is not a mess in your story I take it some of the past continuity when it comes to Bludhaven doesn’t play in your story?

Quick Fire Thoughts!!
Spoilers Therein!!
Action Comics #14
Superman is in soooooooooo much trouble when Lois gets home, or at least he will be if he hasn’t resolved this whole abduction business by the time Mama Bear gets wind of it. While it is super important for Clark and Chris to spend some time bonding (which is great), getting back home late is worthy of me shaking my head in disproval.
Bad Superman, naughty.
Fortunately, it’s Superman, so if anyone is going to get the heart of the matter, I’m certain it’s Papa Bear.

I do love to utilise Z-List characters where I can mostly because they are blank slates with little development, thus allowing a writer to do interesting things with their development. As for your questions, the Countess is not an OC, not Jeanette, it's hard to explain, she's an existing character forced into a new role. As for Soames, since Nightwing has never came to this city those events didn't happen. Still that's all 'Torque' and eventually his bad deeds will come to 'a head'.

Quick reactions to this release's stories:
ACTION COMICS #14 - A really fun series that doesn't take itself too seriously, like much of Tobias' stuff. I appreciate that Tobias puts some effort into the viewpoints of the younger characters. It would be very easy for this series to just feature Superman bashing stuff.
BATGIRL #8 - I think one of Emma's strengths as a writer is introspection. We have a very solid grasp of what's going through Batgirl's head here, and I'm especially excited to see the new dynamic unfold between her and Bette Kane.
DOOM PATROL #5 - Travis is an obvious fan of his characters, and that really comes out in this story. I just love me some Papercut. I would love to see what Danny thinks about all of these people running around with/on him.
IMPULSE #11 - Again, a fun Tobias story that mixes in real life scenarios with supers. Jase is starting to become his own unique character, so I'm very interested in seeing how his personality further develops as he enters school.
LEGION OF DOOM #7 - I like a lot of what I see in this issue for the simple fact that we get a real conflict developing within the League. They're already bruised physically, and it seems like now we get a little emotional abuse thrown in there, too.
NEW GODS #1 - My favorite part of this issue was the very last line. I won't spoil it. It was just one of those moments where, as a reader, you're like, "YEAH!"
RED HOOD: AMERICAN NIGHTMARE #2 - Midnighter versus Shiva. Why haven't I seen this before? Such a great match-up, and I love how Jake is playing with motivations in this issue.
TEEN TITANS #5 - I feel like there's a lot happening off-panel that we're not clued in on. I like some of the interactions between the old Titans and the current roster, so hopefully we get some more mentoring/legacy interactions.
TRUTH OR DARE #2 - A character that no one else would consider making a lead, and it works, extremely well. Makes you wonder what DC is doing over there. They should get John on the payroll as a brainstorming consultant.

Dave: There will be more interacting with past and current Titans in issue 6 after what happened in this issue. As for what has been happening...stay tuned as the Teen Titans will never be the same again.

I'm not actually familiar where Rebirth starts, to be honest after (and due to) the previous reboot (New 52?) I lost track of continuity. If anyone wants to keep elements of the Dixon era Nightwing I can change things up in ToD.
