I have that issue. It's one of my favorite What If's featuring Spidey. Right up there with "What If Spider-Man's Clone had Lived?"
I'm convinced that issue is what caused the Clone Saga...at least indirectly.

Hey David I know you had been working on a What If story featuring Spidey. Is that still in the works?

It's plotted but I never had time to write it. I'll get to it eventually, but with NaNoWriMo starting at midnight tonight...

Was that Al Milgrom on art there? Man I can't stand him. He just ruins comics. There were a few panels of Kitty Pryde & Wolverine that were good ...

I'll play:
1) What if Professor X picked a different group of mutants in 'Giant-sized X-men #1'?
I've always liked the stories where team line-ups were changed around.
2)What if Ben Grimm had decided to stick around and be a pirate from FF#5?
Maybe Namor would have stuck around and become the new 4th member? Plus, pirates make any story better. pirates+ super heroes= bliss!
3)What if marvel smartened up and fixed the actual original 5 X-men, instead of that stupid time travel story!

I do not understand why the original X-Men are allowed to stay in this time period...

Because no one will at marvel will say 'No' to Bendis.
and with the time travel X-men you get to write the team without doing all the work of fixing the screwed up current versions. That would be hard and most writers just want to do their big arc and grab some attention.
Sad to say.

The only thing worse than saying things were poorly done the first time is to completely screw up the second chance.
How about instead of writing a story that can be interpreted as an inexperienced Jean Grey rewiring Iceman's mind to fit her narrow-minded preconceptions, write a story where a questioning young Iceman sees how miserable his repressed future self is and make the decision to accept himself on his own.
Oh, and instruct Angel to punch Cameron Hodge in the face the moment he returns to the past.

I'm not a fan of the young X-Men in the past but...you know, comics is comics. In another two years, they'll be sent back and we'll go back to Utopia or something.
Just while we're on the subject of What If? I was discussing an idea with Ingram last night and he suggested it didn't fit "Canon" (The idea was...Giant Monsters) and suggested it should be an AU idea. There's an element of traction in that, because...why aren't other teams dealing with Giant Monsters (like, say, the FF?) but, you could always add these things back into Canon, right? No idea is too daft?
Just curious what others thought?

Okay, I'll play:
What If...
- Spider-Man lost both Aunt May and Uncle Ben in the same night?
- The Power Pack and Fantastic 4's origins were switched, giving each team the other's powers?
- Steve Rogers was a closeted gay man before getting the powers of Captain America? What would public opinion be of him after learning that Captain America was a homosexual?
- Jarvis, Wong, Aunt May, H.E.R.B.I.E. and Loki formed a superhero team?
- Death was permanent in the Marvel Universe?

bkole: adding giant monsters to any story can only be a good thing. Big fan of the marvel monsters.
Tobias: your team book idea works better if it's: Jarvis, Wong, Aunt May and HERBIE vs Loki. A guest appearance by the Willy Lumpkin might be nice too.
Though, if death was permanent in the MU, who would be left...? Your story would be descriptions of empty super hero HQs.

What If the history of the Illuminati took into account the entire 50+ years of Marvel stories? Especially the meeting after The Crossing and Onslaught.

Or what if the Illuminati actually accomplished something? I love the idea of that group, but all they seem to do in 'New Avengers' is fight each other and not solve any problems.
Would love to see a series where it's just them teaming up in secret to handle all kinds of big, cosmic Grant Morrison style weird menaces in the marvel U.

Or if they made real changes in the world. With all of their collective power and scientific acumen, it would be interesting to see them solve world hunger, the energy crisis, over-population, etc. Would the world appreciate them or condemn them for playing god?

What If all those cures for cancer created to help Captain Marvel weren't accidentally erased?
