Do any of you do particular writing exercises? To improve on your writing I mean?
One thing I find myself doing mentally (and am thinking about actually typing) is watching a scene in a show/movie or a page in a comic and trying to describe in a prose format what's happening. I think the sort of scene setting detail, mood, physicality of people is something I need to work on but generally get away lightly with it because comic fanfiction lends itself to sparse detail (I know I've felt this when reading other peoples work) because the characters and locations are so easy to picture. i.e. I'd never describe what the room in Avenger's mansion or the daily bugle looked like whereas in 'proper' fiction that stuff usually gets laid out and helps set the scene/mood.
Any other writing exercises people use either for creativity or for style/mechanics

All depends on what works for you, I suppose.
I go to Meetups in my area, which helps me focus. As I has a bunch of different projects, to avoid getting stuck on one, I got a pair of dice, numbered them and when I feel like I'm getting log jammed, I just let the dice decide what I do next

Besides fanfic, I do find myself mentally 'rewriting' scenes from TV shows or movies that I watch, if a plot point or bit of dialogue bugs me.
I was in a writer's group, which was a huge help with my writing, but real life got in the way and we dispersed to the far corners of the world.
Another thing I've done to stretch my writing muscles is that when I do join a fanfic site, I don't go in saying 'I want to write so and so', but instead a ask what open titles they have. It's how I ended up on Ghost Rider.

In the last several months, I made a decision to write in a page in a journal every day. Nothing more, nothing less. All just to discipline myself to write every day. I've recently written three and a half issues in the last couple of months (three by myself, one co-write with Steve), so it's been a big help in just making writing a habit for me. Working on my fourth full issue now. Hoping to have another ish with Steve done soon, too.

One of my writing exercises or general just thoughts I have when I'm bored at work or can't sleep is take an idea one of the big two has done and try to create a version for the other company. I love Alpha Flight, is there a country in DC continuity with enough heroes that you could create a team etc.
Current example: Marvel announced in the Dr. Strange series, Stephen Strange has mysteriously vanished and the character that is going to take over while he is MIA is ...Loki.
Now, I can't decide if that idea is great or stupid, but then I started thinking of what would be a DC equivalent. The easy one was Sinsetro becoming Green Lantern of Earth.
Then I tried to do it with a mystical character and now have a page of notes for an else world story where John Constantine is Dr. Fate.

I think Constantine taking on that role, in his eyes, would be him getting saddled with carrying around the helmet. Interesting idea!

I've done similar challenges a lot Travis. I love doing stuff like that. I've recently started brainstorming a DC version of the Thunderbolts.

That's what I'm trying to decide, I want a pretty even mix from all the major rogues galleries plus the more universal villains.
The leader is definitely the Riddler now posing as a mysterious hero called the Sphinx. As who but the Riddler would come up with such a plan? lol
Golden Glider as a flash inspired "team speedster" using new versions of her skates to emulate his powers calling herself "Miss Mercury"
I was thinking one of the old Villainy Inc. girls for WW's contribution. Someone like Hypnota or Zara who haven't been used in AGES.

You could use 'Secret Six' as the team name.
Of course, now that this idea is in my brain, I'm going to obsess until I think up a line up.

Part of why it appealed was in putting him in the full Dr. Fate costume and having him grumble and whine about, as well as complaining because he can't smoke while wearing the helmet.

Actually I was probably just going to call them the Thunderbolts, it's not like there's a DC team that has that name already lol Secret Six would be better if I were basing it off the current Thunderbolts but I saw them more as the early version where it was still a con, trying to pretend to be new characters. Calling them that would be like waving a flag saying "hey we're hiding something!" lol Maybe have them call themselves the All-Star Squadron or something over the top goody two shoes like that heh

I have two words for you....SUICDE SQUAD. They are DC version of The Thunderbolts, and after the film and it's meh we need a new take of them with maybe Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy as part of this new team. One of the early incarnations, Oracle/Batgirl was a member of the squad and she could be useful for both the Squad and JLA.
